Total Recall, a specialized application programming interface, allows any of the major RDBMSs and 4GLs to link with Dataware Technologies' high-end, full text management system, BRS/SEARCH(R). RDBMSs supported include Oracle, Sybase, Informix, Ingres, SQL Server An earlier relational DBMS from Sybase and from Microsoft. Sybase introduced SQL Server in 1988 for various Unix versions. In that same year, with help from IBM, Sybase created an OS/2 version that Microsoft licensed and branded as Microsoft SQL Server.  or any ODBC (Open DataBase Connectivity) A database programming interface from Microsoft that provides a common language for Windows applications to access databases on a network.  compliant database. 4GLs supported include PowerBuilder, Visual Basic, SQL Windows See SQLWindows. , HyperScript, and any with DLL (1) See data link layer.

Total Recall is the first product to combine the strengths of two database technologies -- relational and full text -- to allow organizations to deploy "best of class" techniques to integrate all of their information."

Nearly 100 Total Recall applications have been deployed to date, including document management and regulatory compliance for utilities, news/photo archives for newspapers, litigation An action brought in court to enforce a particular right.  and corporate counsel, and intelligence systems for government agencies and corporations. Total Recall is available to enterprises and systems integrators as an API, a series of application libraries, or complete application systems.

The core functionality of Total Recall is its ability to integrate Dataware's BRS/SEARCH with a 4GL application to transfer search queries and responses between the two environments. Search inquiries originating in the 4GL domain can also be translated into equivalent full text inquiries. Textual information can be stored in its native form and manipulated from within the relational application, using methodologies applicable to text rather than data. The need to convert data is removed, the relational model is simplified, and query processing times are dramatically reduced.

Total Recall supports "best of class" development, with hyperlinks available to provide simple access to other data types, such as images, pictures, sound and video, which can then be launched into the "best of class" tools for viewing and manipulation. Total Recall also supports an open systems environment, with integration to a broad range of products such as client/server architectures, word processing, document imaging, microfilm and archiving systems, and advanced searching technologies.
