Dataquest says worldwide workstation market grew 30 percent in the first quarter of 1997; Windows NT cuts into UNIX workstation market.

In the first quarter of 1997, workstation shipments increased to 259,612 units from 199,128 units in the first quarter of 1996. UNIX-based workstations grew 10 percent over the same period last year, while Windows NT-based workstations grew 242 percent.

Hewlett-Packard led all vendors in the Windows NT workstation market with 22,898 units shipped in the first quarter. Compaq was the No. 2 vendor shipping 17,811 units for the quarter.

While HP was the top vendor based on units shipped, Intergraph was the top vendor in the Windows NT workstation market based on revenue. Intergraph's revenue in the marketplace reached $113 million, while Compaq was the No. 2 vendor with revenue reaching $107 million.
