The remote access systems market consists of remote access servers, concentrators, and low-end routers. While the market is poised for rapid growth, small vendors will struggle to survive in the marketplace.

"Increased competition in the remote access systems market will favor larger vendors, and small players will find themselves forced out of the market because of declining profit margins and restricted access to channels," said Bobbi Murphy, director and principal analyst for Dataquest's Remote LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  and Internet Access See how to access the Internet.  Worldwide program. "The large vendors will engage in an epic battle for dominance in the service provider market, where many will be bloodied, some perhaps mortally."

The access concentrators market is the fastest growing segment with a compound annual growth rate of 50 percent through the year 2000. Access routers made up 55 percent of the remote access systems market in 1995, but by the year 2000, access concentrators will move into the top position with 43 percent of the market (see Table 1). -0-

It often refers to the 64 Kbps channels in T1 lines, which were originally developed to handle digitized voice streams (TDM). See TDM.  T1/E1 or T3/E3 interfaces that combine modem pools, routing, and remote access server functionality into a single platform. Remote access routers are being used to connect remote access servers and concentrators to enterprise and public networks and to connect telecommuters to corporate offices.
