San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 20, 1995--Contrary to some published reports, Dataquest reduced its 1995 forecast for Windows 95 by 3.6 million shipments, from 30 million to 26.4 million.

Of the estimated 26.4 million shipments of Windows 95 from Microsoft this year, about 10 million will remain in the distribution channel at year-end. Therefore, Dataquest estimates that 16.4 million copies of Windows 95 will be in consumers' hands at the end of 1995. The original forecast placed 20 million copies of Microsoft's operating system operating system (OS)

 in the hands of consumers.

"The lower forecast is due to two factors: It is an artifact A distortion in an image or sound caused by a limitation or malfunction in the hardware or software. Artifacts may or may not be easily detectable. Under intense inspection, one might find artifacts all the time, but a few pixels out of balance or a few milliseconds of abnormal sound  of forecasting a product at a time when it was not yet in the market and when the final shipment date had not yet been set, and Dataquest is taking a more conservative view of the holiday season at this time," said Director and Principal Analyst Paul Cubbage.
