PLANO, Texas Plano (IPA: /ˈpleɪnoʊ/) is a wealthy suburb of Dallas, Texas, located to the north, mainly within Collin County, but also extending into Denton County. According to the 2000 U.S.  -- The United States Patent and Trademark Office The United States Patent and Trademark Office (PTO or USPTO) is an agency in the United States Department of Commerce that provides patent protection to inventors and businesses for their inventions, and trademark registration for product and intellectual property  has awarded Datamatic, Ltd., a broad U.S. Patent for its advanced Automatic Meter Reading Automatic meter reading, or AMR, is the technology of automatically collecting data from water meter or energy metering devices (water, gas, electric) and transferring that data to a central database for billing and/or analyzing.  technology. U. S. Patent 6,798,352 is scheduled to be issued on September 28, 2004. Datamatic has been a leading supplier of enterprise meter reading solutions for gas, water and electric municipalities and private utilities worldwide since 1980.

The patent broadly covers creating and storing of all profile information at the meter that is obtained by a remote user via a transceiver and which uses the unlicensed Part 15 radio band to transmit meter information. This exclusive protection provides a substantial competitive advantage for Datamatic AMR (1) (Adaptive Multi-Rate) A variable rate speech codec selected by the 3GPP for the 3G evolution of the GSM cellphone system (WCDMA). Using the Algebraic CELP (ACELP) compression technology, AMR provides toll quality sound at transmission rates from 4.75 to 12.  systems over competing technologies.

"Our FIREFLY firefly or lightning bug, small, luminescent, carnivorous beetle of the family Lampyridae. Fireflies are well represented in temperate regions, although the majority of species are tropical and subtropical. (R) and ProfilePLUS(TM) technologies were a significant breakthrough for utilities," said Datamatic President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  Ken Kercher. "They're the building blocks for Datamatic's AMR system, which allows utilities to cost-effectively collect mission critical data for billing, operations, maintenance and power quality from almost any meter. Our patent demonstrates the superior value of Datamatic's products."

Datamatic offers the most robust, flexible and user-friendly products in the industry. FIREFLY Meter Interface Units are compatible with virtually any water, gas or electric meter, making it the first truly meter independent AMR system in the industry. And all FIREFLY MIU's archive consumption data at user-definable intervals using ProfilePLUS. FIREFLY users can access this data at every meter, anytime.

ProfilePLUS data can be displayed in a graphical, spreadsheet or other meaningful format to solve billing disputes, identify leaks and preventing meter tampering. Utilities can use ProfilePLUS for conservation monitoring, maximizing operational efficiency and planning infrastructure improvements.
