for dedicated and embedded systems, reached a record high in 1999.

This marks a 300% increase over 1998 and an affirmation for Datalight that DOS remains a viable operating system for embedded and dedicated applications.

"ROM-DOS sales have been increasing every year since the product was introduced in 1989," said Roy Sherrill, Datalight's President. "This year alone, two prominent companies licensed over 2.5 million copies of ROM-DOS. While many other DOS providers have abandoned this operating system, our interest in the DOS platform has remained strong. Datalight is the only company that remains committed to the continued evolution of the DOS architecture."

Datalight is currently working on the next ROM-DOS. Available in early 2000, ROM-DOS 7.1 will feature both FAT 32 (File Allocation Table (file system) File Allocation Table - (FAT) The component of an MS-DOS or Windows 95 file system which describes the files, directories, and free space on a hard disk or floppy disk.

Earlier versions of the filesystem restricted filenames to eight characters and a three-character extension (referred to as a DOS 8.  support. Sherrill commented, "There is still a genuine interest in DOS -- our sales numbers have shown us that. For this reason it is important that we continue to develop and refine ROM-DOS to meet the demands of the market."

Introduced in 1989, ROM-DOS is a fully Y2K-compliant operating system. ROM-DOS's high level of compatibility combined with its reliability and small memory footprint make it the ideal choice for OEMs of embedded computers and dedicated appliances.
