DataWave places electronic calling card machines at Amtrak Terminals in the United States.VANCOUVER, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 16, 1996--DataWave Vending, Inc., a high tech "wireless" transaction systems company, has signed a contract to place and operate its proprietary calling card merchandising machines, called DataWave Telecard Merchandisers (DTM DTM dermatophyte test medium. ), at four Amtrak Amtrak, the National Railroad Passenger Corp., authorized to operate virtually all intercity passenger railroad routes in the United States. Amtrak was created by Congress in 1970 in response to more than two decades of continuous operating deficits by privately run terminals. Locations include Albany, New York For other uses, see Albany. Albany is the capital of the State of New York and the county seat of Albany County. Albany lies 136 miles (219 km) north of New York City, and slightly to the south of the juncture of the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers. ; Philadelphia; and Baltimore and New Carrollton, Maryland New Carrollton is a city located in central Prince George's County, Maryland, in the United States. As of the 2000 census, population was 12,589. New Carrollton is 12.11 miles from central Washington, DC. . The agreement was made in conjunction with Intera Communications Corp., a merchandising machine management company based in Minneapolis, and represents a major step in DataWave's expansion into the U.S. market. Clive Barwin, president and chief executive officer of DataWave, describes this new relationship with Amtrak as a milestone for DataWave. "Tourists and travelers are among the consumers most in demand for pre-paid calling cards, which makes Amtrak's terminals one of the best places for our DTM's. The current DTM's in operation, in the United States and Canada, have been generating a steady stream of revenue, with sales of calling cards meeting expectations." DataWave's DTM's are intelligent merchandising machines because they have a proprietary "real time" feature called Point of Sale Activation (POS (1) See point of sale and packet over SONET. (2) "Parent over shoulder." See digispeak. POS - point of sale ). The calling cards have no value until credit or cash payment is made, at which time the calling card is dispensed and activated with a $10, $20, $30, or $50 value. This advantage reduces the problems with vandalism and theft that are most commonly associated with pre-paid calling cards. "As we forge new pathways into the U.S., we welcome our new relationships with both Intera Communications Corp. and Amtrak," stated Barwin. Intera Communications Corp. currently manages in excess of 70,000 merchandising machine locations throughout the U.S. Amtrak currently carries over 21,000,000 passengers annually, operates 500 terminals, and services 45 states. The company's proprietary networked technology for the telecommunications industry's growing Telecard/Cellular markets also has application for other products/services such as "Smart Cards" and personal communications systems. DataWave has entered into agreements to test various sites throughout the U.S. with Denny's, K-Mart and Servico Uniteller, and it has signed a promotional contract with The Crystal Cathedral Ministries whose television program has a viewing audience of 20 million people.
