DataTools announces a unified strategy for Oracle and Sybase backups; DataTools' Open Backup Stream Interface facilitates database support for enterprise wide backups.

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 2, 1995--DataTools today announced a common back end interface for both Sybase and Oracle backups through its SQL-BackTrack family of products. Third-party developers who are members of the DataTools Open Backup Stream Developers Program can integrate Sybase and Oracle database backups into their enterprise or network backup products by supporting a single standard interface. This represents significant time savings as compared to developing specialized point solutions for each database vendor.

The DataTools Open Backup Stream Interface (OBSI) is the back-end interface to the current SQL-BackTrack for Sybase product and a new SQL-BackTrack for Oracle product, announced today. SQL-BackTrack for Sybase, shipping since early 1993, provides mainframe-class backup and recovery functions for Sybase, including incremental backups, data migration and archiving, dry-run recoveries, compression and encryption. SQL-BackTrack for Oracle provides similar capabilities for Oracle databases.

In addition, DataTools has developed modules to support the following backup software products: AT&T CommVault's AT&T Backup, EMC's EpochBackup, IBM's Adstar Distributed Storage Manager (ADSM), and Legato's NetWorker.

DataTools makes the OBSI interface toolkit available to members of the DataTools OBSI Developer's Program. Members of the program today include the following: Chevry (Interbackup); Cheyenne Software (ARCserve for NetWare); MTI (NetBacker); New Era Systems Services, Ltd. (Harbor); Software Moguls (SM-arch); Software Partners/32, Inc. The OBSI Developer's Toolkit is available today from DataTools to build interfaces to SQL-BackTrack for Sybase and SQL-BackTrack for Oracle. SQL-BackTrack for Sybase supports Sybase versions 4.x as well as System 10. SQL-BackTrack for Oracle supports Oracle version 6.x, 7.0, and 7.1.
