DataPath Enables Mission-Critical Communications for Marine Corps in Iraq and Horn of Africa; DataPath and Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) Providers Supply High-Bandwidth Communications System to the Support Wide Area Network (SWAN) Projects.

DULUTH, Ga. -- DataPath, Inc., a global solution provider for mission-critical communications, has deployed a battlefield communications solution, including satellite earth terminals, network equipment and integrated logistics support, for the Marine Corps' three Support Wide Area Network See WAN. (SWAN) projects: Video and Storage Wide Area Network (VSWAN), Logistics Support Wide Area Network (LSWAN) and Horn of Africa Horn of Africa, peninsula, NE Africa, opposite the S Arabia Peninsula. Also known as the Somali Peninsula, it encompasses Somalia and E Ethiopia and is the easternmost extension of the continent, separating the Gulf of Aden from the Indian Ocean. The term Horn of Africa is also used for the surrounding African region, consisting of the countries of Eritrea, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia, and, in some cases, Sudan and other neighboring nations. Support Wide Area Network (HSWAN HSWAN - High Speed Wide Area Network).

SWAN is a satellite and Internet protocol (IP) communications system that provides forward-deployed Marines in Iraq and the Horn of Africa and their central command posts with robust communication capabilities virtually whenever and wherever they need them. As the lead technology partner for the Marine Corps SWAN projects, DataPath worked with several commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) vendors to provide the required reliable, quickly deployed, high-bandwidth capabilities.

"It was essential that we implement real-time communications solutions that deploy quickly to enable the SWAN project," said Captain David Joseforsky, LSWAN/VSWAN/HSWAN project officer, Marine Corps Systems Command. "The robust, reliable communications solutions transform traditional Marine Corps operations. With these solutions, front-line operational forces can capitalize on the resources and intelligence being gathered by central commands, unmanned aerial vehicles and other resources. We expect SWAN to continue delivering vital battlefield intelligence and logistics support as it transitions to a formal program of record."

"Reliability and the accelerated deployment of the SWAN infrastructure are integral to successful operations and increased safety," said Andy Mullins, chief executive officer of DataPath. "We are proud to provide the Marines with the communications capability to increase visibility and enable seamless information sharing during important operations in Iraq and around the globe."

At the center of the SWAN architecture are the DataPath ET 2000 Portable for battlefield communications, a forward-deployed "flyaway" earth terminal, and the DataPath DKET DKET - Deployable KU-Band Earth Terminal 5000 Transportable for base camp communications, a high-powered satellite communications hub.

) and Okinawa logistics operations. Orbital Data's AutoOptimizer TCP accelerator enhances critical application performance over WANs, whether in mesh or hub-and-spoke architectures, enabling virtually any application that sends data between locations to run faster. The solution increases data throughput by up to 200 times and reduces application response time by up to 80 percent.

An overview of the three Marine Corps SWAN projects follows:

--Video and Storage Wide Area Network (VSWAN): VSWAN provides Marines operating in Iraq's Anbar Province on the ground with visibility into potentially dangerous operations through video feeds from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). VSWAN leverages secure satellite communications to disseminate video to command posts, supporting strategic analysis and command requirements.

--Logistics Support Wide Area Network (LSWAN): Using the proven VSWAN architecture as a framework, LSWAN provides logisticians in Iraq, CONUS and Okinawa with visibility into the status of important procurement orders.

--Horn of Africa Support Wide Area Network (HSWAN): HSWAN provides combined voice and data capabilities among Camp Lemonier in Djibouti

"Strengthening the communications link between forward-deployed Marines and central commands provides them with the additional real-time intelligence that is integral to continued operational success," said Richard Pierce, CEO of Orbital Data. "Orbital Data's wide area network optimization capabilities are enabling critical information sharing while extending the traditional limits of connectivity and bandwidth resources on a global basis."
