DataFocus announces new release of NuTCRACKER; enhancements allow developers to produce "More Than a Port".

FAIRFAX, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 24, 1997--DataFocus Inc. today announced version 3.0 of NuTCRACKER(R), the market-leading solution that enables developers to rapidly port UNIX UNIX

Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics).
(R) applications to Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking. (R).

Version 3.0 is the result of DataFocus' continuous refinement of NuTCRACKER's UNIX Operating Environment In computing, an operating environment is the environment in which users run programs, whether in a command line interface, such as in MS-DOS or the Unix shell, or in a graphical user interface, such as in the Macintosh operating system.  for Win32(R) over the last two and one-half years of commercial availability. It's been used to port over 1,000 UNIX applications and more than 200 million lines of code The statements and instructions that a programmer writes when creating a program. One line of this "source code" may generate one machine instruction or several depending on the programming language. A line of code in assembly language is typically turned into one machine instruction. .

NuTCRACKER 3.0 is an integrated UNIX software development environment for Windows NT that is composed of best-of-breed Windows(R) implementations of UNIX standards from market leaders that include Santa Cruz Operation See SCO.

Santa Cruz Operation - (SCO) A supplier of Unix systems for Intel microprocessors. They supply Xenix and Open Desktop.

Founded in 1979, SCO became a public company in May, 1993 and trades on the Nasdaq National Market System under the symbol SCOC.
(SCO (The SCO Group, Lindon, UT, www.sco.com) A leading vendor of Unix operating systems for the x86 platform. SCO had also offered Linux, but abandoned the line in the spring of 2003. The SCO Group is the combination of two companies: Utah-based Caldera, Inc. ), Mortice Kern See MKS.  Systems (MKS (Mortice Kern Systems Inc., Waterloo, Ontario, www.mks.com) A software company that specializes in programming tools and utilities for a variety of platforms. For example, its RCS system for Windows, OS/2 and Unix is a version control software package. ), Hummingbird Communications (HCL HCl

) and DataFocus. Significant features of 3.0 include a new X server from SCO, MKS Toolkit MKS Toolkit is a software package produced and maintained by MKS Inc. that provides a Unix environment for scripting, connectivity and porting Unix and Linux software to both 32- and 64-bit Microsoft Windows systems.  version 5.2, a new UNIX commands and utilities runtime product also based on MKS tools, additional UNIX APIs, extended support for Windows NT 4.0, and support for OpenGL 3D Graphics.

"An issue in developing traditional applications hosted in a UNIX environment for customers that have made a strategic decision to move forward with Windows NT is the time of development and deployment," says Rich Tong, vice president of Windows marketing for Microsoft. "NuTCRACKER 3.0 continues the DataFocus tradition of providing UNIX applications with a strong Win32 migration tool. The customer receives significant value by saving development and deployment dollars and time."

"NuTCRACKER dramatically reduces the time and cost required to migrate mission-critical UNIX applications to Windows NT," said Pat Higbie, chairman and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of DataFocus. "More importantly, it allows UNIX applications to run directly on the Win32 subsystem of Windows NT, a necessity for true integration with other Windows applications, and for making use of many third party UNIX libraries that are only available on Win32, and finally for supporting Windows(R) 95."

NuTCRACKER 3.0 Highlights

-------------------------

Version 3.0 includes SCO XVision Eclipse, the robust, high- performance PC X Server from SCO. SCO XVision Eclipse and the latest release of SCO Wintif have been integrated with the NuTCRACKER 3.0 Operating Environment to provide end users with the ability to run UNIX system Noun 1. operating system, OS - (computer science) software that controls the execution of computer programs and may provide various services
and Windows applications together in one seamless Windows environment.

NuTCRACKER customers can now purchase low-cost run-time licenses for MKS's Toolkit shell and utilities to be used in conjunction with NuTCRACKER's Operating Environments to execute UNIX application scripts on Windows NT. MKS Toolkit has been a core component of NuTCRACKER's development environment since 1994. Run-time commands include: the KornShell, awk, grep, vdiff, cpio, tar, mkszip, make, find, uuencode, and uudecode and over 175 additional utilities.

DataFocus will also offer Exceed 5 and Exceed 3D to customers who require OpenGL and Exceed's robust functionality and performance. HCL's technology will be bundled into a new product offering, the NuTCRACKER X/SDK OpenGL Option. DataFocus is offering this product to meet the unique needs of customers with UNIX applications that contain high-end, 3D graphics -- like medical imaging and computer animation software. These applications contain a mixture of UNIX, X/Motif and OpenGL calls and can now be moved to Windows NT quickly and without rewriting source code. These enhancements further solidify the DataFocus commitment to provide a complete solution for supporting mission-critical UNIX applications on 32-bit Windows platforms.

More Than a Port(TM)

--------------------

NuTCRACKER 3.0 supports three migration objectives to yield

working applications on Windows NT as described below:

-- PORT: Applications can be ported from any brand of UNIX, because NuTCRACKER's UNIX Operating Environment is based on a portability standard comprised of the most highly used APIs of Solaris(R), HP-UX HP's version of Unix that runs on its 9000 family. It is based on SVID and incorporates features from BSD Unix along with several HP innovations.

(operating system) HP-UX - The version of Unix running on Hewlett-Packard workstations.
(R), AIX (Advanced Interactive eXecutive) IBM's Unix-based operating system which runs on its Intellistation workstations and pSeries, p5, iSeries and i5 server families. (R) and SVR Noun 1. SVR - Russia's intelligence service responsible for foreign operations, intelligence-gathering and analysis, and the exchange of intelligence information; collaborates with other countries to oppose proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, terrorism and 4(R). With 3.0, most UNIX applications will run on Windows NT 4.0 with changes to less than 0.1% of the source code, and many applications will run without any changes. Ported applications can present a Windows look-and-feel and can be maintained on both Windows NT and UNIX from a common source code base.

-- INTEGRATE: NuTCRACKER 3.0 further extends its portability standard to include Win32(R) APIs and utilizes Visual C++(R) 4.2 and the Windows NT 4.0 linker to produce native executables for the Win32 Subsystem of Windows NT. Ported applications can be optimized and integrated with other Windows applications through direct access to Win32's APIs, similar to the way brand-specific API extensions are used to optimize performance when porting applications between two brands of UNIX.

-- EVOLVE: NuTCRACKER's combined support of both UNIX and Win32 APIs gives developers the freedom to evolve their applications with Win32 APIs including ActiveX and DCOM (Distributed Component Object Model) Formerly Network OLE, it is Microsoft's technology for distributed objects. DCOM is based on COM, Microsoft's component software architecture, which defines the object interfaces.  -- APIs which will soon be available on Solaris and other UNIX brands -- so portability back to UNIX can still be supported even as applications evolve. NuTCRACKER 3.0 developers get portability benefits from a standard based on popular UNIX brands and they get the freedom to move forward with defacto standard Win32 APIs to produce More Than a Port.
