Data fears as laptops are stolen; SECURITY.


CIVIL servants' personal data may be at risk after computers were stolen, it was revealed last night.

A probe has been launched following the removal of the laptops from offices at Upper Queen Street, Belfast, over the weekend.

All computers were password-protected, marked and their serial numbers had been recorded.

A spokesman for the Department of Finance and Personnel The Department of Finance and Personnel (DFP) is a government department in the Northern Ireland Executive. The department is responsible for the financial business of the Government of Northern Ireland.  said: "The DFP (Digital Flat Panel) A digital interface for a flat panel display from VESA (www.vesa.org). Based on the electrical interface of the earlier P&D (Plug & Display) standard, DFP uses TMDS transmission and a 20-pin mini-D ribbon (MDR) connector.  is conducting an investigation into what information was stored on these laptops and what risk, if any, may be posed to civil servants' personal data."

A police spokeswoman added: "A full and thorough investigation is ongoing."
