A research agency of the U.S. Department of Labor; it compiles statistics on hours of work, average hourly earnings, employment and unemployment, consumer prices and many other variables. reports a record 63.8 million people volunteered in 2003, which
represents an increase of more than 6 percent from 2002. The percentage
of people age 16 and older who volunteered increased to 28.8 percent
from 27.4 percent. And volunteerism among teenagers increased from 26.9
percent to 29.5 percent.
