ALEXANDRIA, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 28, 2002

The Data Interchange Standards Association (standard) Data Interchange Standards Association - (DISA) A not-for-profit corporation that acts as the secretariat for ANSI's EDI standards committee, ASC X12 that works on ANSI X12.  (DISA 1. (body) DISA - Defense Information Systems Agency.

) will host meetings for the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C (World Wide Web Consortium, www.w3.org) An international industry consortium founded in 1994 by Tim Berners-Lee to develop standards for the Web. It is hosted in the U.S. by the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) at MIT (www.csail.mit.edu/index.php). ) two key working groups developing common specifications for Web services, Sept. 9-13, 2002, at DISA's offices in Alexandria, Va.

Virginia Governor Mark R. Warner offered his support for the upcoming meeting.

"I am pleased that WC3 will hold its next meeting in Virginia," Governor Warner said. "The Commonwealth remains a communications technology leader, and we lend our full support to organizations like DISA and W3C that are developing interoperable technologies to lead the Web to its full potential."

Web services are Internet-based components that perform independent computing functions, but because they are based on standards, can be interconnected to provide more comprehensive business services. The more mature of these functions include messaging, directories, and service descriptions, but several other specifications are in development.

Earlier this year, the W3C started its Web Services Activity (http://www.w3.org/2002/ws/) to design a set of technologies fitting into the overall Web architecture and help bring the development of Web services to their full potential. Web services are based on the eXtensible Markup Language See XML.

), also a W3C specification.

"DISA is committed to the success of e-business standards, and supporting the W3C and its work in Web services are indicators of that commitment," said DISA President Jerry Connors.

The W3C groups meeting at DISA include the Web Services Architecture Working Group and Web Services Description Working Group. The Web Services Architecture Working Group (http://www.w3.org/2002/ws/arch/) is formulating the overall structure of Web services, identifying the individual building blocks in this structure, and specifying the relationship among these components.

The Web Services Description Working Group (http://www.w3.org/2002/ws/desc/) is designing a language to specify the interfaces to and interactions with Web services, working from a previous Web Services Description Language “WSDL” redirects here. For other uses, see WSDL (disambiguation).

The Web Services Description Language (WSDL, pronounced 'wiz-dəl' or spelled out, 'W-S-D-L') is an XML-based language that provides a model for describing Web services.

About the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)

The W3C was created to lead the Web to its full potential by developing common protocols that promote its evolution and ensure its interoperability. It is an international industry consortium jointly run by the MIT MIT - Massachusetts Institute of Technology  Laboratory for Computer Science (MIT LCS) in the USA, the National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control (INRIA INRIA - Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et Automatique ) in France and Keio University in Japan.

Services provided by the Consortium include: a repository of information about the World Wide Web for developers and users, and various prototype and sample applications to demonstrate use of new technology.
