Data General to support Oracle's framework for network computing; Standards-based initiative complements Data General's open systems strategy.


WESTBORO, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 1, 1996--Data General announced today that it will support Oracle's Network Computing Storing and/or running applications in servers in a network. See cloud computing and network computer.  Architecture on its family of AViiON servers.

Based on open standards Specifications for hardware and software that are developed by a standards organization or a consortium involved in supporting a standard. Available to the public for developing compliant products, open standards imply "open systems;" that an existing component in a system can be replaced , this architecture provides a cross-platform environment for developing and deploying network- centric applications regardless of computing computing - computer  model.

"Network Computing Architecture complements Data General's open systems strategy of offering our customers a choice of industry-standard solutions," said Sue Sweeney, Vice President of Strategic Alliances at Data General. "This network-centric framework will drive demand for standards-based secure and scalable systems, such as our high-security internet products and future ccNUMA systems."

The open approach of Network Computing Architecture will enable AViiON servers to participate in multi-vendor environments and support a number of different computing models, such as client/server, the internet, and distributed objects Software modules that are designed to work together but reside in multiple computer systems in a private network or on the global Internet. A program in one machine sends a message to an object in a remote machine to perform some processing. . With these capabilities customers can preserve their software investments and leverage new server technologies without limiting their ability to deploy future network-centric applications.
