Data General to market, sell Novell's GroupWise 4.1 on AViiON platform.


WESTBORO, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 22, 1994-- Data General Corp. announced today that it has entered into an independent software vendor (ISV (Independent Software Vendor) A person or company that develops software. Under terms of the agreement, Data General will market and sell GroupWise 4.1 (Formerly WordPerfect Office A suite of office applications for Windows from Corel that includes WordPerfect, Quattro Pro, Corel Presentations, Paradox and CorelCENTRAL (PIM, scheduling, etc.). GroupWise 4.1 for AViiON servers: Features and Benefits

o AViiON servers automatically maintain the integrity of the GroupWare databases. With GroupWise 4.1, when database problems are encountered, the AViiON server can be configured to automatically clean up problems encountered in the database without waiting for and relying on the administrator.

-- An Administration Server provides the administrator with the necessary tools to configure and maintain the system by propagating user updates across post offices and domains.

-- An Office Server, the workhorse of the system, moves messages between the post offices to the individual users' mail boxes.

-- A Message Server moves messages from post office to post office throughout the entire system.

o Connectivity between GroupWise 4.1 and other e-mail systems including the Internet (SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) The standard e-mail protocol on the Internet and part of the TCP/IP protocol suite, as defined by IETF RFC 2821. SMTP defines the message format and the message transfer agent (MTA), which stores and forwards the mail.  on AViiON). Other gateways available from Novell include X.400 (OS/2 server), X.25 (OS/2 Server), Lotus cc:Mail (DOS Server) and NetWare Global MHS (1) (Message Handling Service) An earlier messaging system from Novell that supported multiple operating systems and other messaging protocols, including SMTP, SNADS and X.400. It used the SMF-71 messaging format.  (DOS Server, NetWare Loadable Module See NLM. ).

GroupWise is available immediately from Data General. Pricing for the Message Server Pack for AViiON is $1,995 and SMTP Gateway for the AViiON server is $3,995. GroupWise Client/Admin Packs, available for DOS, Windows, UNIX, and Macintosh, are priced at $695 and include 5-user licenses. Additional right-to-copy licenses range from $135 for a single user to $95/user when purchased in quantities between 100-499 users.
