The company will initially target two industries that have traditionally been strong markets for Data General: retail and healthcare.

"In concert with our strategic software partners, we will provide retail and healthcare users with the elements needed to construct a comprehensive data warehouse," said Sue Sweeney, vice president of Strategic Alliances for Data General. "We are bringing these solutions to two industries where we can provide added value Added value in financial analysis of shares is to be distinguished from value added. Used as a measure of shareholder value, calculated using the formula:

from our vast experience in meeting customer information technology needs."

Industry analysts have projected that the total data warehousing market will exceed $8 billion by 1998.

Data General's Business Warehouse Program, which is based on its AViiON server and CLARiiON storage platform, is supported by all the major database vendors, including Informix, Oracle and Sybase.

Retail

Data General's Business Warehouse Program will enable retail businesses to use data collected in the course of everyday transactions to support their strategic decision making. Healthcare

In healthcare, the growth of HMOs along with the trend toward outcomes analysis -- collecting data on both medical treatment and the outcome of treatment -- have greatly expanded the demand for data warehousing solutions.
