solution at this week's Unix Expo trade show.

Among the solutions that will be displayed at Data General's exhibit booth no. 1354 will be its CYBERSHIELD secure internet server solution and clustered AViiON servers running either Microsoft Windows NT Server or DG/UX, the company's UNIX implementation.

Internet Security

Data General's CYBERSHIELD is an AViiON-based solution that is an Internet server, Intranet server and Firewall all in one. It enables businesses to conduct electronic commerce and run enterprise-wide applications over the Internet without having to worry about external or internal security threats.

CYBERSHIELD includes Data General's DG/UX B2 Security operating system operating system (OS)

Software that controls the operation of a computer, directs the input and output of data, keeps track of files, and controls the processing of computer programs.
, and CYBERSHIELD Secure Internet Software (CSIS Noun 1. CSIS - Canada's main foreign intelligence agency that gathers and analyzes information to provide security intelligence for the Canadian government

In practice, many of these groupings may overlap. .

CSIS provides firewall capability, security management and data filters that scan for viruses, check keywords and easily adjust to fit an organization's information access policy.

"This solution is ideal for companies who want to leverage the Internet and Intranets for their day-to-day business transactions with customers, partners and suppliers as well as to maximize the information available for their own employees," said Rick Strom Rick Strom may refer to:

Running on the CYBERSHIELD secure internet server will be a family of products from Open Market Inc., a leading provider of Internet commerce software. These products provide users with the means to deploy Internet business applications and manage critical aspects of electronic commerce.

UNIX, NT Clustering

Data General will also be demonstrating its Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  and UNIX clustering capabilities.

AViiON NT Clusters combines Firstwatch for NT failover software from Veritas with Data General's Intel based AViiON server line, fault tolerant CLARiiON RAID technology storage systems and NT Alert automated problem detection software.

Data General worked closely with Veritas to develop the NT version of Firstwatch and is the first company to use the product. Failover software from Veritas had been used strictly with the UNIX operating system Noun 1. UNIX operating system - trademark for a powerful operating system

until now and has been marketed by Data General's CLARiiON Business Unit for more than two years.

"We combined our enterprise computing expertise with Veritas' experience in designing high availability software," said Frank Kenney, Data General's director of NT Marketing. "With our AViiON NT Clusters solution, companies will be able to run their businesses using Microsoft NT as an enterprise operating system 24 hours a day, seven days a week."

AViiON NT Clusters can be used with two AViiON servers, each running up to four 200 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  Intel Pentium Pro processors with 512 KB cache per processor and up to 4GB of memory.

In addition, the company will also feature a cluster of four UNIX based AViiON systems with CLARiiON Series 2000 storage systems. The servers run DG/UX Cluster Software, administered by Data General's PC-based DG/UX Cluster Manager.

"DG/UX Clusters provides a scalable, high availability UNIX platform for mission-critical applications. The DG/UX Cluster Manager offers an easy to use graphical interface which allows the administrator to manage an AViiON cluster as a single system," added Strom.

Much more than simple failover, DG/UX Clusters provides 7X24 applications availability. It also enables software upgrades and selected hardware maintenance without downtime. DG/UX Clusters can be interconnected across multiple sites using replication server software, providing global availability of applications and data throughout the enterprise.

Data General's clustering capabilities are complemented by the company's unique AV/Alert (for UNIX) and NTAlert software. These products provide advanced features such as system diagnostics, machine-initiated call out to worldwide service centers and remote assistance that alert Data General engineers to potential system failures so they will not occur.
