Data General continues to deliver on enterprise UNIX roadmap; Plans to resell and support SCO UnixWare 2.1 on AViiON servers.WESTBORO, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 20, 1996--Keeping with its commitment to SCO UnixWare as the UNIX operating system Noun 1. UNIX operating system - trademark for a powerful operating system UNIX, UNIX system operating system, OS - (computer science) software that controls the execution of computer programs and may provide various services of choice for the high-volume, Intel technology-based enterprise market, Data General Corporation today announced that it plans to resell, distribute and support SCO UnixWare 2.1 on its AViiON servers. SCO UnixWare 2.1 soon will be shipping on the SCO (The SCO Group, Lindon, UT, www.sco.com) A leading vendor of Unix operating systems for the x86 platform. SCO had also offered Linux, but abandoned the line in the spring of 2003. The SCO Group is the combination of two companies: Utah-based Caldera, Inc. certified AV 2000 and AV 3000 systems. Shipment on other AViiON servers is expected in October. "Data General continues to implement the aggressive agenda we set for ourselves at the first Enterprise Summit," said Phil Gerskovich, vice president of the NUMALiiNE Business Unit for Data General. "We have forged a number of significant alliances with SCO and Enterprise Summit OEMs which will strengthen the enterprise capabilities of the SCO UnixWare system through the addition of NUMA (Non-Uniform Memory Access) A multiprocessing architecture in which memory is separated into close and distant banks. NUMA is similar to SMP, in which multiple CPUs share a single memory. However, in SMP, all CPUs access a common memory at the same speed. (Non Uniform Memory Access) and other technologies." Since the April 23rd Enterprise Summit, Data General has made a series of technology sharing and strategic OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and partnership announcements, including: -- Working with SCO to develop the NUMA version of SCO UnixWare; -- Establishing the NUMALiiNE Business Unit that is targeting the market for high-end commercial servers currently dominated by UNIX UNIX Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics). applications; -- Forging NUMALiiNE OEM relationships with ICL, the United Kingdom's leading computer maker; Dansk Data Elektronik, Denmark's premier supplier of mid-range UNIX computer systems; Daewoo Telecom Limited, part of the Daewoo Group, one of Korea's largest companies; and Unisys Corporation, one of the largest information management companies in the U.S. ICL and Unisys also participated in the Enterprise Summit. NUMALiiNE technology includes the ANSI/IEEE standard Scalable Coherent Interface (hardware, protocol) Scalable Coherent Interface - (SCI) The ANSI/IEEE 1596-1992 standard that defines a point-to-point interface and a set of packet protocols. The SCI protocols use packets with a 16-byte header and 16, 64, or 256 data bytes. (SCI (Scalable Coherent Interface) An IEEE standard for a high-speed bus that uses wire or fiber-optic cable. It can transfer data up to 1GBytes/sec. (hardware) SCI - 1. Scalable Coherent Interface. 2. UART. ) interconnect technology and sophisticated operating system features. Using NUMA architecture, Data General is building large-scale systems linking multiple Intel SHV servers that will perform at levels far beyond today's most powerful SMP systems. The SHV boards include up to four Pentium Pro processors with 512 KB cache per processor, up to 4 GB memory, and dual PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS. (2) (Peripheral Component Interconnect) The most widely used I/O bus (peripheral bus). I/O channels. "NUMA will become a leading commercial technology since, unlike Massively Parallel Processing systems, existing SMP software applications do not have to be modified," added Gerskovich. Data General plans to introduce systems based on NUMALiiNE technology before the end of this year. These systems, along with subsystems, memory boards and other NUMA-based technology, will be available not only as part of Data General's own AViiON server product line, but also in OEM versions. "We believe the work of SCO and the efforts of the companies involved in the Enterprise Summit will ultimately deliver the long promised benefits of a single UNIX system for hardware manufacturers, resellers, ISVs, and end users alike," added Gerskovich. Among the early adopters of SCO UnixWare 2.1 on Data General's AViiON platform will be the Ministry of Defense in the United Kingdom, Pacific Access a leading provider of solutions to the telecommunications industry, and HBO Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) A form of oxygen therapy in which the patient breathes oxygen in a pressurized chamber. Mentioned in: Ozone Therapy Inc., one of the primary suppliers of healthcare industry solutions. Data General also intends to resell UnixWare through third-party channels, including OEMs and VARs. The company also will promote SCO UnixWare in conjunction with SCO at trade shows, user conferences and through special promotions and programs.
