Data General co-sponsors historical UniForum exhibit highlighting major industry technology transitions; Virtual exhibit available on the Web.WESTBORO, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 13, 1996--Data General Corp. is co-sponsoring an exhibit with the Intel Museum and the Computer Museum at this year's UniForum '96 in San Francisco that highlights major historical technology shifts in the computer industry. The exhibit, entitled "Generations" will be on display in Moscone Center's South Hall, booth no. 2416. "Generations" was previously shown at the Fall 1995 COMDEX The former, premier computer trade show in the U.S. Although it grew into an end user event, it was originally created for dealers and distributors (it was the COMputer Dealers EXposition). tradeshow and received much public acclaim. The collection features original hardware to chronicle the history of the industry. Such notable machines as an IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) 360, a PDP-8 and VAX (Virtual Address eXtension) A venerable family of 32-bit computers from HP (via Digital and Compaq) introduced in 1977 with the VAX-11/780. VAX models ranged from desktop units to mainframes all running the same VMS operating system, and VAXes could emulate PDP models 11/780 from Digital Equipment Corp., Data General's NOVA, a Xerox Alto, an MIT's Altair 8800, Osborne 1, Apple II, an early Compaq Transportable, and a Sun workstation highlight "building block" transitions from transistors to integrated circuits to microprocessors, an don't to Standard High-Volume (SHV SHV Shareholder Value SHV Standard High Volume SHV Sheave SHV Steenkolen Handels Vereeniging SHV Shreveport, LA, USA - Regional Airport (Airport Code) SHV Sport Horse Versatility SHV Supersonic/Hypersonic Vehicle SHV Super Hybrid Vehicle ) servers. Earlier AViiON models used the Motorola 88000 CPU, but later models moved to an all-Intel solution when SMP (Symmetric MultiProcessing) A multiprocessing architecture in which multiple CPUs, residing in one cabinet, share the same memory. In late 1996, Data General will introduce scalable, high-end systems built from multiple SHV boards using the Cache Coherent Non-Uniform Memory Access (architecture) Non-Uniform Memory Access - (NUMA) A memory architecture, used in multiprocessors, where the access time depends on the memory location. A processor can access its own local memory faster than non-local memory (memory which is local to another processor or shared (ccNUMA) architecture and linked with the high-speed, industry-standard Scalable Coherent Interface (hardware, protocol) Scalable Coherent Interface - (SCI) The ANSI/IEEE 1596-1992 standard that defines a point-to-point interface and a set of packet protocols. The SCI protocols use packets with a 16-byte header and 16, 64, or 256 data bytes. (SCI (Scalable Coherent Interface) An IEEE standard for a high-speed bus that uses wire or fiber-optic cable. These large-scale servers will bring processing power and price/performance undreamed of in previous eras to thousands of today's enterprise SMP applications.
