Data General announces strategic healthcare software partnerships; Agreements with MarkCare, Health Systems Design and PaperChase solidify industry leading position.


WESTBORO, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 15, 1996--Data General Corp. today announced that MarkCare Medical Solutions, a subsidiary of Mark Solutions Inc., of Bloomfield, N.J. and Health Systems Design, of Oakland, Calif. will offer their healthcare solutions on Data General's Intel-based AViiON servers.

In addition, Data General has signed an agreement to distribute PaperChase, an on-line biomedical literature retrieval service offered by Boston's Beth Israel Hospital See:

. This strategic partnership allows healthcare clinicians to search for and download vital information pertaining to medical research. With PaperChase users can search four databases simultaneously -- MEDLINE The online medical database of the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) whose parent is the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD. MEDLINE contains millions of articles from thousands of medical journals and publications. The consumer section of the site (http://medlineplus. , HealthSTAR, AIDSLINE AIDSLINE AIDS Information OnLINE  and CANCERLIT CancerLit Oncology The NCI's bibliographic database of published research that contains compilations of select citations and brief reviews on cancer topics: wwwicic.nci.nih.gov/canlit/canlit.htm  -- without having to know medical subject headings or a command search language. PaperChase also offers CINAHL, an important nursing database.

HSD's solution provides numerous network management applications including member and group administration, benefit plan management, utilization management, provider contracting, claims adjudication, premier billing and accounts payable.

The agreement with MarkCare Medical provides an efficient solution for hospital radiology departments. MarkCare's INTRASCAN II medical image management system also will now run on Data General's Intel-based AViiON servers. As hospitals are faced with the task of managing data and images despite shrinking budgets and reduced space, Data General and MarkCare have collaborated to provide a total solution for the processing, reporting, reading, archiving and storing of medical images in the healthcare provider environment. INTRASCAN II is accessible to the entire network and can be integrated with the existing radiology information system A Radiology Information System (RIS) is used by radiology departments to store, manipulate and distribute patient radiological data and imagery. The system generally consists of patient tracking and scheduling, result reporting and image tracking capabilities.  (RIS) to provide simultaneous access to diagnosis and picture.

INTRASCAN II also allows for the storage and recall of images and text from several different imaging modalities, including X-ray, CT, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, RTPS, DSI, DSA and MRI.

Data General's Intel-based AViiON servers offer a broad performance range, from powerful eight-processor enterprise servers to inexpensive, entry-level servers for reseller and workgroup applications. Intel-based AViiON servers combine Data General's expertise in commercial systems with Intel's superior microprocessor technology to provide a new standard in enterprise computing -- robust, high availability systems riding a new performance curve.
