A fault-tolerant system is designed from the ground up for reliability by building multiples of all critical components, such as CPUs, memories, disks and power supplies into the same computer.  CLARiiON RAID technology storage system and the company's NTAlert automated problem detection service support combined with Firstwatch for NT failover software from VERITAS Software Veritas Software Corp. was an international software company that was founded in 1983 as Tolerant Systems, renamed Veritas Software Corp. in 1989, and merged with Symantec in 2005. It was headquartered in Mountain View, California.  Corporation all in a single rackmounted system. The clustering solution is "R/3 ready" and available worldwide immediately.

"This is the first NT clustering solution for SAP's R/3 that will allow businesses to run their mission critical applications 24 hours a day, seven days a week in a single pre-configured rackmount system that users can simply plug in and turn on," said David Ellenberger, vice president, Corporate Marketing for Data General. "The same NT Cluster-in-a-Box hardware configuration we are offering today also will support the Microsoft Wolfpack clustering solution when it becomes available later this year."

"SAP is targeting the clustered R/3 solution for industries such as finance, retail and utilities, where data integrity and high availability Also called "RAS" (reliability, availability, serviceability) or "fault resilient," it refers to a multiprocessing system that can quickly recover from a failure. "Clustering is of paramount importance for many R/3 users and therefore SAP will support Microsoft's Wolfpack cluster solution as the standard cluster solution for R/3 on Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking. ."

Data General's NT Cluster can be used with two AViiON servers, each running up to four 200MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  Intel Pentium Pro processors with 512KB integrated cache per processor and up to 4GB of memory. The AViiON servers included in the cluster have been certified for R/3 use by iXOS Software GmbH of Munich, Germany. The servers are complemented by the company's CLARiiON disk arrays, the industry's leading high availability RAID storage solution.

Data General worked closely with VERITAS to develop the NT version of Firstwatch and is the first company to use the failover product. The software from VERITAS had been used exclusively with the UNIX operating system Noun 1. UNIX operating system - trademark for a powerful operating system
