Data General and Daewoo Telecom form strategic partnership; Daewoo to market Data General servers and storage systems; Agreement to include Data General's NUMALiiNE technology.

WESTBORO, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 8, 1996--Data General Corporation and Daewoo Telecom Limited announced today they have formed a strategic partnership, under which Daewoo Telecom will market Data General AViiON AViiON was a series of computers from Data General that were the company's main product from the late 1980s until the company's server products were discontinued in 2001. Earlier AViiON models used the Motorola 88000 CPU, but later models moved to an all-Intel solution when  servers, including the company's forthcoming NUMALiiNE technology based systems; and CLARiiON storage systems to its worldwide customer base.

Daewoo Telecom is part of the Daewoo Group, one of Korea's largest companies with annual sales of more than $55 billion. Daewoo Telecom is the sole manufacturer of computer systems, peripherals, system integration, and telecommunications systems for the Daewoo Group.

"With its tradition of technology excellence, Data General is the perfect strategic partner for Daewoo," said Dr. Seung-ku Yi, general manager for Daewoo Telecom's System Business Unit. "We are working with Data General because we believe NUMA (Non-Uniform Memory Access) A multiprocessing architecture in which memory is separated into close and distant banks. NUMA is similar to SMP, in which multiple CPUs share a single memory. However, in SMP, all CPUs access a common memory at the same speed.  technology will be the marketplace choice for high-end computing, and Data General is the leader in bringing this new technology to market."

The agreement involves Data General's current AViiON product line, which includes both Intel Pentium based systems and servers using Pentium Pro The sixth generation of the Intel x86 family of CPU chips. Daewoo Telecom will also use Data General's AViiON server and CLARiiON storage products within its own and other Daewoo Group operations.

In addition, the two companies said they plan to work together on future operating system and NUMA technology efforts designed for the Korean marketplace.

Daewoo Telecom is the third major computer manufacturer to announce that it will use Data General's NUMALiiNE technology in systems it resells. ICL (International Computers Ltd., London) The former name of Fujitsu Services, the European-centered arm of the global Fujitsu Group and one of the leading IT services companies in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.  of the United Kingdom and Dansk Data Elektronik of Denmark announced similar plans last month.

Data General's NUMALiiNE implementation, using advanced NUMA technology, includes the ANSI/IEEE standard Scalable Coherent Interface (hardware, protocol) Scalable Coherent Interface - (SCI) The ANSI/IEEE 1596-1992 standard that defines a point-to-point interface and a set of packet protocols. Using NUMA architecture, the company is building large-scale systems linking multiple Intel SHV servers that will perform at levels far beyond today's most powerful SMP systems. The SHV boards include up to four Pentium Pro processors with 512 KB cache per processor, up to 4GB memory, and dual PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

"We are very pleased to be working with Daewoo Telecom, one of the world's most sophisticated technology companies," said Joel Schwartz, Data General vice president of Worldwide Sales and Marketing. "This is a significant agreement as it will greatly expand our market presence in Korea and the Pacific."

Phil Gerskovich, vice president of Data General's NUMALiiNE Business Unit, added, "We will be at the forefront in delivering these powerful large-scale systems. NUMA will become a leading commercial technology since, unlike Massively Parallel Processing systems, existing SMP software applications do not have to be modified."

As part of today's agreement, DaeWoo Telecom also will resell Data General's full line of CLARiiON storage systems and associated peripherals with the AViiON servers.

CLARiiON systems range from the entry-level Model 150 designed for PC LAN environments to the rackmount, 20-drive Series 2000 systems designed for enterprise-level environments, supporting multiple Terabytes of storage in a single unit.

CLARiiON storage arrays can be configured to deliver the desired level of RAID technology support necessary to meet all application performance and data availability requirements.
