 IDC, announced today at COMDEX/Fall '98 the AViiON(R) AV 8700, its the most powerful high-end Windows NT server based on Intel Pentium II Xeon (processor) Pentium II Xeon - The successor to Intel Corporation's Pentium II processor.

The Xeon has the same P6 core as existing Pentium Pro/Pentium II units, but it supports a 100 MHz system bus and offers as much as 2 MB of level 2 cache.

 processors. The AV 8700 is the industry's first NT server designed specifically for clustering, with an advanced server chassis that can support two 4-way systems in a high availability, Cluster-in-a-Box(R) configuration which includes CLARiiON(R) full Fibre Channel storage. In addition, the AV 8700 provides customers with an attractive path to 8-way processing and support for future Intel processors.

"With the launch of Microsoft SQL Server A relational DBMS from Microsoft that is a major component of the Windows Server System. It is Microsoft's high-end client/server database and is closely integrated with Microsoft Visual Studio and the Microsoft Office System.  7.0, Windows NT applications will be growing larger and will be deployed in more mission-critical environments," said David Flawn, vice president of NT marketing at Data General. "Data General is delivering maximum-dependability NT solutions into these environments. The AV 8700 high-availability platform combined with CLARiiON Fibre Channel arrays form a key component of these solutions. Data General is also the first vendor to deliver 99.9% uptime guarantee with this caliber of system."

Demonstration at COMDEX The former, premier computer trade show in the U.S. Although it grew into an end user event, it was originally created for dealers and distributors (it was the COMputer Dealers EXposition).

The AV 8700 server was the platform used by Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) to port their PharmIQ data warehousing solution to Microsoft SQL Server 7.0. At COMDEX, CSC will use the AV 8700 to demonstrate how PharmIQ's development and analysis tools can help pharmaceutical companies implement a data warehouse and quickly start to realize value from their information technology assets.

John Williams, PharmIQ Solutions Director at CSC commented, "The porting of CSC's PharmIQ to NT and SQL Server 7.0 was enabled by Data General's enterprise NT expertise and the performance of the new AViiON AV 8700 server. The AV 8700 gave us excellent response time and provided the ability to handle large amounts of data as we exercised the data crunching capabilities of SQL Server 7.0."

AViiON AV 8700

Each AV 8700 system supports two or four Pentium II Xeon processors, up to 8 GB of ECC-protected memory, 10 PCI slots, and a maximum of 13 internal SCSI SCSI

 bays. Storage options include nine internal disk array SCSI bays or CLARiiON full Fibre Channel storage.

Advanced Clustering Design and High Availability

The standard AV 8700 rack chassis incorporates fully redundant and hot swappable power supplies and cooling fans for all system configurations. With capacity to house up to four systems (16 processors) in a single cabinet, the AV 8700 is designed to accommodate NT Cluster-in-a-Box or multi-node LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  configurations. This rackmount capability saves valuable floor space and is ideal for the diverse integration requirements of resellers and system integrators.

High availability features of the AV 8700 server include N+1 hot-swappable power supplies (standard); N+1 hot-swappable cooling fans (standard); redundant memory board; internal storage with hardware RAID support and hot-swappable disk drives; no single-point-of- failure and hardware RAID support for mirrored, internal Windows NT boot drives; fault tolerant CLARiiON storage; and ECC (1) (Error-Correcting Code) A type of memory that corrects errors on the fly. See ECC memory.

(2) (Elliptic Curve Cryptography) A public key cryptography method that provides fast decryption and digital signature processing.
 protected memory.

Extensive diagnostics features are built-in to the AV 8700 system architecture, including comprehensive remote diagnostics even when the Windows NT Server operating system See network operating system.  is not functional. The AV 8700 also supports deconfiguration with automatic re-boot when CPUs, memory modules, and power supplies fail. These advanced remote diagnostic capabilities were developed to maximize system uptime and user productivity.

The AV8700 supports leading NTerprise Manager server management NTAlert advanced diagnostics, including remote control video/keyboard, remote power cycle, and machine-initiated callout.

Pricing and Availability

Street pricing for the AV 8700 starts at under $20,000 for a 2-processor system with 512MB of memory. Three-year hardware warranty, 48-hour response, and installation are included in the base price. The AV 8700 is also available in NT Cluster-in-a-Box pre-loaded, pretested packages which include two AV 8700 servers, and a 10-slot CLARiiON subsystem with Windows NT Server and Microsoft Cluster Server Clustering software from Microsoft for Windows NT/2000. It provides rudimentary load balancing and two-node failover, which allows a second server to take over if the first one fails. Cluster Server was formerly code named Wolfpack.  software. Customer shipments are expected within 45 days.

OMNiiCARE 99.9% uptime guarantee for Windows NT and SQL Server 7.0 is available as an option. The conditions and limitations of the guarantee are described at: http://www.dg.com/services/html/omniicare_service.html.
