"We are now taking that concept to the next level with complete prepackaged solutions consisting of applications, integration and implementation services, performance, and uptime guarantees, based on our server and storage technologies."

Baan Company

"We are pleased to bring to our CPG customers this unprecedented approach to easing the deployment of ERP software -- an initiative that aligns with our mission to reduce the complexity of enterprise applications," said Kevin Calderwood, president of strategic global accounts for Baan Company. "We expect that the strength of Data General, Baan Company, and SE Technologies will provide our customers with faster implementations and, therefore, more rapid return on their ERP investment."

Microsoft

"Data General, Baan Company, and SE Technologies are delivering the kind of complete solution that the ERP market has been asking for," said Holly Henson, group marketing manager of ERP at Microsoft Corp. "With guarantees for implementation, performance, and uptime, customers can be assured of timely implementation and a satisfactory production environment based on SQL Server 7.0."

SE Technologies

SE Technologies, one of the largest Baan Company implementation consultation and customization practices in the US, provides both broad technical experience with Baan Company software products and expertise in the CPG vertical market. In addition, SE Technologies provides extensions to Baan Company business software that address the specific requirements of manufacturers in the CPG market.

"There is a high level of synergy among the companies bringing this prepackaged solution to market," said Stuart Itkin, vice president of Marketing at SE Technologies. "In particular, Data General's strength lies in its systems' ability to support the large numbers of concurrent users typical of the CPG market. In addition, as Data General demonstrates in their booth at Comdex, the thin-client computing model supported by TermServer-in-a-Box enables customers to lower their total cost of ownership by maintaining investments in their current desktop devices."

Itkin continued, "The SE Technologies-developed extensions further enhance the fit and function of these pre-packaged solutions and enables us to substantially reduce the time required for implementation to provide customers rapid realization of return on their investment."

AberdeenGroup View

"The provision of a total packaged solution targeted at mid-market companies has great promise -- Data General's solid high-availability hardware solutions coupled with Baan Company business software and SE Technologies' implementation services. The risk alleviation for customers through the performance and up-time guarantees further adds value to the package -- value beyond that found elsewhere in the market today," commented Katherine Jones, senior market analyst in Enterprise Business Applications at the AberdeenGroup.

Implementation, Performance, and Uptime Guarantees

Data General's OMNiiCARE 99.9 percent uptime guarantee is available in North America for selected AViiON servers, in clustered configurations, running the Enterprise Edition of Windows NT Server 4.0 operating system. Data General has extended this uptime guarantee to SQL Server 7.0. The conditions and limitations of the uptime guarantee are described at: http://www.dg.com/services/html/omniicare_service.html. In addition, offerings by Data General and SE Technologies will include (respectively) performance guarantees and implementation guarantees addressing customer-specific needs.

Demonstration at COMDEX

Data General is displaying this solution at COMDEX with a thin-client computing environment, supported by Data General's high-availability TermServer-in-a-Box, consisting of a rackmounted system with four AV 2700 servers, two AV 3700 servers and a 10-slot CLARiiON full Fibre Channel storage subsystem. Data General's demonstration also features Baan Company business software, running on Microsoft SQL Server 7.0, Microsoft Cluster Server Clustering software from Microsoft for Windows NT/2000. It provides rudimentary load balancing and two-node failover, which allows a second server to take over if the first one fails. Cluster Server was formerly code named Wolfpack. , Windows NT Server 4.0 Enterprise Edition, and Windows NT Server 4.0 Terminal Server Edition, and Citrix Systems Inc. MetaFrame(tm) server-based computing software.
