For about two months, at Lincoln Center, two companies, the New York City Ballet New York City Ballet, one of the foremost American dance companies of the 20th cent. It was founded by Lincoln Kirstein and George Balanchine as the Ballet Society in 1946. and American Ballet Theatre American Ballet Theatre, one of the foremost international dance companies of the 20th cent. It was founded in 1937 as the Mordkin Ballet and reorganized as the Ballet Theatre in 1940 under the direction of Lucia Chase and Rich Pleasant. , perform cheek by jowl at the New York State Theater The New York State Theater is part of New York City's Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts complex. The theater occupies the south side of the main plaza (at Columbus Avenue & 63rd Street) that it shares with the Metropolitan Opera House and Avery Fisher Hall (home of the New and Metropolitan Opera House, respectively. Fans have been known to dash across the plaza during intermission to catch a premiere or a favorite pas de deux, and this year is no exception. From its unmatched repertoire of works by company founder George Balanchine, NYCB brings back his full-length A Midsummer Night's Dream A Midsummer Night's Dream is a romantic comedy by William Shakespeare written sometime in the 1590s. It portrays the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of amateur actors, their interactions with the Duke and Duchess of Athens, Theseus and Hippolyta, and , a ballet that touches the heart while economically telling the story of Shakespeare's play. Meanwhile, across the plaza, ABT presents its own equally magical version, Frederick Ashton's The Dream. And each company will be showing its updated, full-length Swan Lake. With ballerinas such as NYCB's Wendy Whelan and ABT's Gillian Murphy in the lead role, fireworks are guaranteed. |
