 Hospital Air-Rights building.

The new 12-story building, extending from 68th Street to 70th Street, is supported on 91-foot span steel transfer trusses spaced at 25 feet on center spanning over the FDR Drive. Phased construction dictated that a platform be constructed as a completely independent structure capable of spanning the FDR Drive and acting as a work platform for the construction of the hospital tower above.

The platform consists of a nine-foot deep single story truss truss, in architecture and engineering, a supporting structure or framework composed of beams, girders, or rods commonly of steel or wood lying in a single plane.  with two framed levels. Provisions are included at the top chord of the truss to accept the balance of the three-story transfer truss that will support the new hospital building.

Functioning as the structural centerpiece for the new building, the platform resolves a number of technical and functional issues. It allows the hospital to utilize air rights; provides sufficient head room for vehicular traffic on the FDR Drive; and facilitates parking within a shallow dimension. In addition, it creates improved access to the new Emergency Room. Overall, it represents optimum response to issues of safety, construct-ability, installation and cost.

The new 776-bed acute care facility will incorporate state of-the-art intensive care units; new surgical suites; a new emergency department with special areas for psychiatric care and pediatrics; new nursing units; obstetric ob·stet·ric or ob·stet·ri·cal

Programmatically, the structure will reflect The New York Hospital "Centers of Excellence" concept, which provides housing on one floor for inpatient, ambulatory, and teaching facilities pertaining to a single service.

Lehrer McGovern Bovis worked closely with the design engineers, Thornton-Tomasetti, and geotechnical engineers Langan Engineering, to provide construct ability reviews throughout the design process. The goal of the construction and design team was to develop a set of contract documents to allow maximum flexibility, allowing for the most competitive pricing.

Steel erection can be performed only at night with no traffic permitted on the FDR Drive. Subsequent operations such as bolting or welding, concrete placement, mechanical and electrical work, etc., will be performed during normal working hours over traffic. Therefore, a protective shield over the FDR Drive was required.

The design of the temporary shield had to accommodate various construetion activities, including the protection of traffic from the lower level concrete placement. The New York City New York City: see New York, city.

Department of Transportation required a minimum clearance during construction of 12 feet above the roadway surface to the underside of the shield and a permanent structure clearance of 17 feet. Allowing for shield construction, the working headroom was only about 4 feet.

Erection Scheme

Working closely with the design engineers and the structural steel and concrete trade contractors, LMB developed a dramatic water erection scheme using a Chesapeake 1000 Shearleg Derrick Barge. The scheme involved pre-assembling two or three trusses and both levels of framing to form panels that would be transported to the job site by barge and erected from the water. Maximizing the use of the Chesapeake 1000 capacity, the final erection scheme was developed.

All structural steel was fabricated at the steel contractors yard and shipped to a waterfront staging area staging area
