Business Editors and High-Tech Writers

ORINDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 15, 2000

Dantz Development Corporation announced today a free upgrade to its award-winning Retrospect(R) Backup software for Microsoft (Nasdaq:MSFT MSFT Microsoft (stock symbol)
MSFT Movimento Sociale Fiamma Tricolore (Italy)
MSFT Multi-Stage Fitness Test
MSFT Master of Science in Family Therapy
MSFT Macalester Students for Fair Trade
) Windows 95/98/NT/2000. Retrospect Backup 5.1 introduces new features which make the industry's most reliable backup software even more powerful and flexible.

NEW FEATURES

Retrospect 5.1 adds to Retrospect's outstanding feature set with several new abilities most requested by end-users:

Windows 2000 Support

Retrospect 5.1 builds on version 5.0's Windows 2000 support by adding optimized backup and restore of COM (1) (Computer Output Microfilm) Creating microfilm or microfiche from the computer. A COM machine receives print-image output from the computer either online or via tape or disk and creates a film image of each page. + and Certificate Server databases, as well as full backup and restore of encrypted files and directories. In addition, Retrospect Workgroup Backup and Retrospect Server Backup offer full protection for Windows 2000 Server and Advanced Server by providing Active Directory support.

External Scripting

Retrospect 5.1 can now shut down and restart databases, send email when media is required, and notify the administrator if unauthorized access is attempted. External scripts can be executed at key points in the backup process, such as at the beginning and end of various backup operations, allowing unattended backup of otherwise constantly running systems. Several sample scripts are included to automate common operations such as backing up Outlook mail clients and Exchange Servers. Additional scripts are included as programming examples. Retrospect supports external scripts from DOS batch files to compiled applications created in C or Visual Basic, providing unlimited extensibility for advanced users.

Open File Backup

Version 5.1 also offers improved open file backup capabilities, both at the server and client level. Open spreadsheets, word-processing documents, and graphics files are backed up, even though they're in use at the time the backup occurs.

ReportsWatcher

The new ReportsWatcher feature compiles data from one or more Retrospect backup computers and makes it available in HTML HTML

form. ReportsWatcher allows administrators to view a comprehensive console report of backup activity for an entire organization. Detailed report options include viewing successful or failed backup operations for each backup server, computers that have never been backed up, and performance data for each computer backed up.

Retrospect 5.1 adds support for additional devices, such as OnStream ADR ADR - Astra Digital Radio  drives and several new CD-RW (CD-ReWritable) The only rewritable CD technology. CD-RW disks look like other CD media, but with close inspection, they have a more polished surface with a very dark blue-gray cast.  drives. Retrospect includes a huge library of custom device drivers and automatically configures itself for use with any supported tape, CD-R (CD-Recordable) A writable CD technology using a type of compact disc that can be recorded, but not erased (CD-Rs are "write once" discs). CD-R discs are used to master CD-ROMs, to back up data and to make copies of data for distribution. (W), DVD-RAM A rewritable DVD disc endorsed by the DVD Forum. Using phase change technology, DVD-RAMs are like removable hard disks, and the media can be rewritten 100,000 times compared to 1,000 times for DVD-RW and DVD+RW.
