Dantz Announces Major Upgrade to Retrospect Backup for Windows; Retrospect Backup 5.5 Adds Complete Disaster Recovery, Additional Restore Options, and Enhanced Performance.Business/Technology Editors ORINDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 16, 2001 Dantz Development Corporation today announced a major upgrade to the entire Retrospect(R) Backup software product line for Microsoft (NASDAQ NASDAQ in full National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations U.S. market for over-the-counter securities. Established in 1971 by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), NASDAQ is an automated quotation system that reports on :MSFT MSFT Microsoft (stock symbol) MSFT Movimento Sociale Fiamma Tricolore (Italy) MSFT Multi-Stage Fitness Test MSFT Master of Science in Family Therapy MSFT Macalester Students for Fair Trade ) Windows. Retrospect Express, Desktop, Workgroup, and Server Backup have been upgraded to version 5.5. The upgrade increases performance and adds requested features, including an automated Disaster Recovery wizard. "Our most popular customer request has been for a bootable disaster recovery feature," stated Lawrence Zulch, Dantz CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. . "We believe that Retrospect version 5.5 offers the most reliable and precise emergency restore capability available, and our customers will be able to benefit from that reliability with their existing backups." BOOTABLE DISASTER RECOVERY All Retrospect Backup editions are now able to boot and completely restore a computer running Microsoft Windows 95/98/Me, Windows NT 4.0, or Windows 2000 after complete hard drive failure. Retrospect's new Disaster Recovery feature is simple to use, and it does not require current Retrospect owners to create fresh backups; it will work with their existing backup sets. Retrospect Workgroup and Server Backup can also completely restore a Windows NT or 2000 Server from bare metal. While other backup software only offers emergency server restore capabilities with a costly add-on, Retrospect's Disaster Recovery feature is included free with all products. Retrospect creates a bootable CD image that is saved to the hard disk. The user can either burn a disc immediately with their favorite CD mastering software or store the image file on another computer for later use. When disaster strikes, the user simply boots from this CD. Retrospect uses the CD to load Windows and restore the computer to its exact, pre-disaster state. "Other products require the user to continuously maintain disaster recovery CDs or boot floppies," remarked Richard Zulch, Dantz CTO (Chief Technical Officer) The executive responsible for the technical direction of an organization. See CIO and salary survey. . "Only Retrospect allows you to create one CD and then use your most recent backup set to perfectly restore your computer in a single operation -- even after multiple incremental backups." The only time the user needs to create a new CD image is when significant hardware modifications are made to the computer. RESTORE ANYWHERE, ANYTIME Retrospect Backup 5.5 also includes additional restore functionality. Files may now be selected from any listing of backed-up data, such as a session browser or backup set contents report. Any number of files from any number of backup sets may be selected, and Retrospect will automate and optimize the restore process. Retrospect's restores may also be performed on an active system, allowing a disk, folder, or the Registry to be "rolled-back" to a previously backed-up state. As long as the disk being restored is visible to the Retrospect application, it is not necessary to use the Disaster Recovery feature or first install a temporary operating system; simply run the restore and reboot To reload the operating system, which restarts the computer. See boot. (operating system) reboot - (From boot) A boot with the implication that the computer has not been down for long, or that the boot is a bounce intended to clear some state of wedgitude. PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENTS Retrospect 5.5 also features performance increases in several areas, including source volume scanning, large network file transfers, backup of NTFS (NT File System) An optional file system for Windows NT, 2000 and XP operating systems. NTFS is the more advanced file system, compared to FAT32. It improves performance and is required in order to implement numerous security and administrative features in the OS. security permissions, and Snapshot creation. Retrospect 5.5 also offers remarkably faster catalog rebuilds from tape backup sets, reducing recovery time following a complete failure of the backup computer.
