Dante's Paradise Doors, Michelangelo's Last Supper, and Wrought Iron Gates Rivaling Buckingham Palace Are Highlighted in a Guided Tour at Forest Lawn-Glendale.


GLENDALE, Calif. -- Every day the world's master artisans are represented through original works and reproductions of some of the most beloved art and architecture on the grounds of Forest Lawn Forest Lawn is the name of a number of different places:

Cemeteries
Forest Lawn is a generic name for many cemeteries in the United States. The majority of these are old, elaborate cemeteries that historically had a secondary use as a public park:

Tour highlights include:

--The majestic front entry wrought iron wrought iron: see iron.

One of the two forms in which iron is obtained by smelting. Wrought iron is a soft, easily worked, fibrous metal. It usually contains less than 0.1% carbon and 1–2% slag.
 gates which stand 25-feet tall -- five feet taller than the gates of Buckingham Palace -- and 80-feet long. Weighing 5,000 pounds, each door has been masterfully crafted and balanced so that the slightest touch of the hand can move them easily.

--The Little Church of the Flowers, the first of the three churches built in the Glendale, the first church in the country to be placed inside a memorial-park, and the first Forest Lawn church to host a wedding celebration in 1923.

--The Last Supper Window, a one-of-a-kind, life-size work of art created using original drawings that Leonardo da Vinci Leonardo da Vinci (də vĭn`chē, Ital. lāōnär`dō dä vēn`chē), 1452–1519, Italian painter, sculptor, architect, musician, engineer, and scientist, b. near Vinci, a hill village in Tuscany.  used as he painted this masterpiece, and crafted by Rosa and Cecilia Caselli-Moretti, the last great stained glass artisans of their century.

Throughout the tour, visitors will learn about some of the hundreds of statues in Forest Lawn-Glendale, of which nearly 90% are original works of art. Reproductions were used only if a statue could not be moved from its original location, such as Michelangelo's David, Moses and La Pieta.

The tour is available free of charge to all visitors. The tour lasts approximately one hour, starting at 10 a.m., allowing visitors to explore the artwork, architecture and peaceful environment.
