Dansk Data Elektronik A/S to market Data General servers and storage systems; Agreement includes NUMALiiNE technology based AViiON servers.

WESTBORO, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 25, 1996--Data General Corp. and Dansk Data Elektronik A/S (DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange) A message protocol in Windows that allows application programs to request and exchange data between them automatically.

Earlier AViiON models used the Motorola 88000 CPU, but later models moved to an all-Intel solution when  servers and CLARiiON storage systems to its customers worldwide.

NUMA is similar to SMP, in which multiple CPUs share a single memory. However, in SMP, all CPUs access a common memory at the same speed.  (Non-Uniform Memory Access (architecture) Non-Uniform Memory Access - (NUMA) A memory architecture, used in multiprocessors, where the access time depends on the memory location. A processor can access its own local memory faster than non-local memory (memory which is local to another processor or shared ) architecture, which are expected to be available from Data General late this year.

Claus Erik Christoffersen, president of Dansk Data Elektronik, said, "We are pleased to be partnering with a company like Data General, which traditionally has been in the forefront of technology. DDE will market AViiON alongside our existing line of Supermax Enterprise Servers, the primary platform for DDE's vertical solutions. This agreement with Data General will strengthen our horizontal business solutions in the Windows NT arena and solutions based on market standard SCO UnixWare. Thus this agreement opens the opportunity of a technology partnership based on complementary areas of competence within our two companies."

Dansk Data Elektronik, which is based in Denmark, is the second major European computer manufacturer to announce that it will use Data General's NUMALiiNE technology in systems it sells. ICL (International Computers Ltd., London) The former name of Fujitsu Services, the European-centered arm of the global Fujitsu Group and one of the leading IT services companies in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. , the United Kingdom's leading computer company, announced similar plans earlier this month.

"We are pleased to announce this agreement with Dansk Data Elektronik, Denmark's premier supplier of mid-range UNIX UNIX

computer systems," said Joel Schwartz, vice president of Worldwide Sales and Marketing for Data General. "This is another step in our plan to become the industry leader in bringing large-scale systems based on NUMA technology to the commercial marketplace."

Data General's NUMALiiNE implementation, using advanced NUMA technology, will link multiple Intel SHV baseboards into large-scale systems that perform at levels far beyond today's most powerful symmetric multiprocessing systems. The SHV servers are built using four 200-MHz Pentium Pro processors, cache, memory and dual PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

Phil Gerskovich, vice president of Data General's NUMALiiNE Business Unit, said, "NUMA will become the leading high-end computing technology because the thousands of software applications currently running on SMP (Symmetric MultiProcessing) A multiprocessing architecture in which multiple CPUs, residing in one cabinet, share the same memory. SMP systems provide scalability. As business increases, additional CPUs can be added to absorb the increased transaction volume.  systems will not have to be modified to run on NUMA systems."

The NUMALiiNE Business Unit, formed by Data General earlier this month, is responsible for developing OEM relationships and a worldwide distribution network for its NUMA server technology and systems.

As part of the agreement announced today, Dansk Data Elektronik also will resell Data General's full line of CLARiiON storage systems and associated peripherals with the AViiON server line.

CLARiiON systems provide the most advanced high availability RAID storage solution for open enterprise environments. The CLARiiON family ranges from the entry-level Model 150 designed for PC LAN environments to the rackmount, 20-drive Series 2000 systems designed for enterprise-level environments, supporting multiple terabytes of storage in a single unit.

CLARiiON storage arrays can be configured to deliver the desired level of RAID technology support necessary to meet all application performance and data availability requirements.

Dansk Data Elektronik A/S is a Danish information technology vendor with a long track record of delivering complete integrated solutions. DDE has built a unique competence in the areas of UNIX, Windows NT, relational databases and Internet technology. The company has utilized this competence to build customized solutions for public libraries, newspaper production, and the local and central government and education markets.
