A similar failure to silence a noisy dissenter for many years is that of former diocesan priest Daniel Maguire, professor at the Jesuit University of Marquette. After 35 years of pro-abortion and anti-Church agitation (he started after his laicization in 1971), he finally pushed the bishops' patience over the edge by recently sending all of them two pamphlets explaining that abortion, contraception, and same-sex unions are legitimate teachings within the Catholic Church. That, the Doctrinal Committee of the United States bishops ruled, is a falsehood. In a statement published on March 23, 2007, the Committee formally laid down that the pamphlets "do not present authentic Catholic teaching."
