Daniel Buren.MUSEE D'ART MODERNE art moderne: see art deco. DE LILLE Lille (lēl), city (1990 pop. 178,301), capital of Nord dept., N France, near the Belgian border. With its central position in NW Europe, Lille became a great commercial, cultural, and manufacturing center, long known for its textile products—notably lisle (the name is derived from an older spelling of the city's name). METROPOLE, VILLENEUVE D'ASCQ ASCQ - Additional Sense Code Qualifier (SCSI command set)/INSTITUT D'ART CONTEMPORAIN, VILLEURBANNE Villeurbanne (vēlürbän`), city (1990 pop. 119,848), Rhône dept., E central France, a suburb E of Lyons. It is a major industrial center; metals, machines, textiles, and chemicals are produced there. Of the handful of upcoming European exhibitions devoted to Daniel Buren, this pair looms large. In Villeneuve d'Ascq, the emphasis is on the artist's beginning through the refinement of his "visua1 tool" (striped canvas in bands 8.7 centimeters wide, alternately white and color) in 1967 Also on offer, in Villeurbanne, is a retrospective of the "Cabanes," an in-progress suite begun in 1982 that takes architecture and the notion of in situ (central to Buren's thought) in a radically new direction. The occasion coincides with the publication of the first volume of Buren's catalogue raisonne. Villeneuve d'Ascq, Jan. 22-May 14; Institut d'art Contemporain, Villeurbanne, Jan. 21- May 21. |
