Daniel's fantastic sea trip.


What a cracking day it was for 15-year-old Daniel Wright of Stanley when he went for a day's fishing aboard Alan Skinner's boat Sarah JFK.

Daniel had barely recovered from the effort of landing a personal best ling of 13lb for his rod to keel over to upset; to capsize.

 a few drops later as another big fish took his mackerel mackerel, common name for members of the family Scombridae, 60 species of open-sea fishes, including the albacore, bonito, and tuna. They are characterized by deeply forked tails that narrow greatly where they join the body; small finlets behind both the dorsal and  baited daylights.

After another tremendous struggle Daniel pulled another monster ling over the gunwales, which increased his personal best to 22lb 8oz.

Boat fishing in general, although hampered by the unsettled conditions has been quite good and Dans De Leaur out of Blyth took cod to 14lb and ling to 12lb. Mike Wood the skipper is taking bookings for winter up-tiding trips ( a method which has taken some big cod. Bookings can be made by calling (0191) 237-1183 or 07719906849.

Amble amble

a slower, non-racing version of pace gait in horses.

has many characteristics of the amble but there are four beats to the gait with each foot contacting the ground independently. Called also single-foot.

There have also been reports of a 10lb pollock being taken out of Sunderland.

Although not many fish are coming from St Abbs, Colin Green fishing just down the side took a wrasse wrasse (răs), common name for a member of the large family Labridae, brilliantly colored fishes found among rocks and kelp in tropical seas.  of 4lb 8oz on fresh crab, only ounces off the North-East record.

Shore anglers are having some cracking sport from the lower Tyne with codling to 3lb and coalfish. Andy Wilson took 17 fish ( his best 2-8-0 ( on a variety of baits while John Taylor took seven cod for 9-2-0 in Cleadon's match from the walkway. The same venue gave Joe Gibson 17 cod to 3lb during a regular session with all but four returned.

Dave Hayley, fishing Tynemouth pier, took four cod and a whiting for 7-3-0 to win Tynemouth's Billy Elliot cup match while Michael Todd took a nice cod of 4lb in a two-fish bag of 6lb to win Blyth's match and the Haven gave Tony Berresford a cod of 5-8-0 which proved to be the winning bag and heaviest fish in the Railway Inn's match.

Lynemouth beach is also fishing well and Paul Fenech took 14 cod to 1-8-0 (all returned) during one session while another session gave Paul six cod to 4lb ( fresh crab proving the best bait. A few codling are coming from the pipe skeers at Whitley Bay and Doug Spivey took three for 6-5-4 ( the best 2-6-12( in Tynemouth's first winter league match.

Most piers are still giving reasonable catches of mackerel and Seaham's anglers had a cracking day when massive shoals appeared off the pier with anglers taking up to a 100 fish, most of which where returned.

Roker pier is giving good catches of whiting during darkness with a few cod to 3lb and mackerel during the day.
