AS a doctor at Carstairs, Steele came in contact with the most violent killers and sex offenders.

The Lanarkshire facility's patients have included Kalashnikov killer Noel Ruddle, who gunned down a neighbour with a weapon he bought in a pub.

In 1994, Ruddle, who was freed in 1999 because of a legal loophole, was found to be having an "inappropriate" relationship with a female member of staff at Carstairs. Sam Glass, 61, has spent 41 years at Carstairs for the brutal sex killing of a young girl.

Another patient is Gregor McGurk, 44. He beheaded his father and kicked the head around in a car park. Serial child rapist James Ferguson is also detained there along with Stephen Muirhead, who laughed as he hacked a woman to pieces. In 1976, maniac lovers ThomasMcCulloch and Robert Mone butchered their way to freedom from Carstairs.They murdered a patient, a nurse and a police officer before being caught.
