Dancer Callum in bid for world title; SUCCESS: Sixth-former thrilled with his high marks at national championships.

PRINCETHORPE College Princethorpe College is a Catholic independent day school located in Princethorpe, near Rugby, Warwickshire, England. It was founded in the late 1950s as St Bede's College in Royal Leamington Spa, before moving to its current site in 1966.  student Callum Spencer is jigging with delight after qualifying for the World Irish Dancing Championships to be held in Glasgow next April.

The 17-year-old sixth former - who only started dancing "because his younger sister was doing it" - is thrilled with his success.

A member of the Matthews Dance Academy in Potters Green, Coventry, Callum has been Irish dancing for six years alongside his 13-yearold sister Ailis and brother Alisdair, aged 15, who also study at Princethorpe.

 in Manchester and came runner-up, his best ever placing at the competition, earning him automatic quali-fication into the world event.

His performance in the hornpipe hornpipe, English folk dance known since the 16th cent., when it obtained its name from the wind instrument that accompanied it. The hornpipes of the 17th and 18th cent. have moderate 3–2 time and 4–4 time. , the reel and the set dance were judged on both technical accuracy and artistic flair.

He said: "I was really pleased to have come second and I can't wait to take parts in the worlds.

"My whole family were watching me and while I thought I'd done well I felt at best I'd come fifth or sixth.

"My technical accuracy was strong and the positioning of my feet was good so I think that's what gained me the extra marks."

Callum, who lives in Broughton Vale, near Lutterworth, is studying for his A-levels in physical education, biology and maths alongside his Irish dancing training which takes up to ten hours a week.

He hopes to gain good enough grades to study a sports science Sports science is a discipline that studies the application of scientific principles and techniques with the aim of improving sporting performance.
