Dance world loses Benjamin Harkarvy ... (News).


Internationally known artistic director, choreographer, and teacher Benjamin Harkarvy American dance teacher, choreographer, and artistic director, Benjamin Harkarvy (1930-2002), earned an international reputation for his eclectic approach to dance education (as demonstrated most notably in his tenure as the director of the Juilliard School Dance Division), as well  died on March 30. He collapsed two days earlier while leaving Juilliard after a rehearsal with some of the students. Harkarvy, who had been receiving treatment for a heart condition during the past year, had served as the director of Juilliard's Dance Division since 1992. Prior to his Juilliard appointment, he was artistic director and choreographer for numerous companies including the Royal Winnipeg Ballet The Royal Winnipeg Ballet, based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, is Canada's oldest ballet company and the longest continuously operating ballet company in North America.

It was founded in 1939 as the "Winnipeg Ballet Club" by Gweneth Lloyd and Betty Farrally.
, Nederlands Dans Theater Nederlands Dans Theater (Dutch Dance Theatre also known as the NDT) is a contemporary dance company established in 1959 breaking away from the more traditionally oriented Dutch National Ballet (Het Nederlands Ballet). , which he co-founded, and the Pennsylvania Ballet The Pennsylvania Ballet is a ballet company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, established in 1963 by Barbara Weisberger. The company became a regionally important institution, and performed in New York for the first time in 1968. . At Juilliard, he created a program for high school-aged dancers, increased options for Juilliard dancers interested in choreography, and expanded opportunities for students to work directly with choreographers. He was 71 years old.

A memorial performance was planned for May 21 at 8:00 P.M. at the Juilliard School.
