Dance step back in time.

A SLOVAKIAN dance group that helped popularise Verb 1. popularise - cater to popular taste to make popular and present to the general public; bring into general or common use; "They popularized coffee in Washington State"; "Relativity Theory was vulgarized by these authors"  the Billingham International Folklore folklore, the body of customs, legends, beliefs, and superstitions passed on by oral tradition. It includes folk dances, folk songs, folk medicine (the use of magical charms and herbs), and folktales (myths, rhymes, and proverbs).  Festival in its early days has returned to help the event celebrate its 45th anniversary.

The Urpin Folk Ensemble The word ensemble can refer to
  • a musical ensemble (This, along with 'ensemble cast' are the most commonly used ways to describe an ensemble though obviously not the only ways)
, with a gypsy influenced style of music and dance, took part in the second ever Festival in 1966 and again in 1982.

And although the dancers have changed they still received a warm Billingham welcome as they performed in the sunshine yesterday afternoon.

When one of the group's leaders Peter Pohanianik heard it was the Folklore Festival's anniversary he asked if it would be possible to take part, saying that Billingham holds a special place in the group's heart.

"We still have one of the Billingham Folklore posters in our dance HQ back home," he said.

The members of the group work in a range of professional careers when not performing in festivals. The Festival also enjoyed performances from Thailand, Poland and Martinique.
