Dance of death.I would like to suggest that DM cover Kurt Jooss' The Green Table. I have never seen it and very much wish a dance company in the New York City area would perform it. I have seen photos and it looks very compelling. It reminds me of the dance version of Erich Maria Remarque's All's Quiet on the Western Front. And, sadly the topic seems more and more relevant as the days go by. PHYLLIS M. FREED LAURENCE HARBOR, NJ DM Responds: The Green Table has not been performed in New York since the Joffrey Ballet Joffrey Ballet, one of the major American dance companies. It was founded in New York City in 1954 by the dancer-choreographer Robert Joffrey. From 1956 to 1964 it made yearly tours of the United States. The company was dissolved in 1964 and then revived in 1965 by Joffrey, Alex Ewing, and Gerald Arpino. In 1966 it became affiliated with the New York City Center as the City Center Joffrey Ballet. Extremely popular, the company toured worldwide. relocated to Chicago. American companies that perform The Green Table are Oakland Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, and Milwaukee Ballet. In Dance Magazine's June 2003 issue on page 33, the ballet is mentioned in the article, "Dances of Protest." |
