Human Kinetics Pub. 2009 188 pages $39.00 Paperback GV1589 For dancers in secondary school through college, this text explores the interactive relationship between dance and the other arts. Pomer, a performer and teacher, provides 25 exercises that examine traditional and contemporary art forms from around the world and how to interpret them through movement. Each exercise takes dancers through the process of observation, exploration, creation, and reflection, moving from simple to challenging, and relating ideas such as shape and light in art, time and tone color in music, and emotion and character from literature and drama to dance. Each section ends with a choreographic project and includes artist interviews. The CD contains original music written for the text by composer Barry Prophet to accompany the exercises and assignments. There is no index or bibliography. Handouts and student journal pages are available on the companion website. ([c]2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR) |
