Dance Theatre of Harlem Dance Theatre of Harlem, the first black classical ballet company. The group was founded in Harlem, New York City, by Arthur Mitchell, then of the New York City Ballet, the first black principal dancer of a classical company of international standing. continues to come back from its financial crisis with a grant from the Ford Foundation. The four-year $1 million gift will be used to grow the Dance Theatre Of Harlem School and its "Dancing Through Barriers," including developing a K-12 curriculum.
