Dance Africa celebrates 25 years. (Presstime News).

In 1977, Dr. Charles "Chuck" Davis, founder and artistic director of the African American Dance African American dances in the vernacular tradition (academically known as "African American vernacular dance") are those dances which have developed within African American communities in everyday spaces, rather than in dance studios, schools or companies.  Ensemble, decided to launch a festival of African dance The term African dance refers mainly to the dances of subsaharan and West Africa. The music and dances of northern Africa and the Sahara are generally more closely connected to those of the Near East. Also the dances of immigrants of European and Asian descent (e.g. . The Brooklyn Academy of Music Brooklyn Academy of Music, performing arts center located in the borough of Brooklyn, N.Y. and popularly known as BAM. Founded in 1859 and opened in 1861, it is the oldest such institution still in operation in the United States.  signed on to produce the event. And DanceAfrica was born. What started as a local, Brooklyn-based celebration has grown into the largest festival of African and African American dance, music, and culture in the country. And DanceAfrica now has sister celebrations in Chicago and Washington, D.C.

Seven companies, including Davis's, Renne Harris PureMovement, Cutumba, and Creative Outlet Dance Theatre of Brooklyn, will perform for DanceAfrica's twenty-fifth anniversary, which focuses on the dance and rhythms of Cuba.
