The Foundation, which was founded in 1946 by the famous journalist and radio personality, Walter Winchell Walter Winchell (April 7 1897 – February 20, 1972), an American newspaper and radio commentator, invented the gossip column at the New York Evening Graphic. He broke the journalistic taboo against exposing the private lives of public figures, permanently altering the , became a co-owner of this property in the 1960's through a charitable bequest. Since then, it has used the income from the lease of this property, along with donations from across the nation, to support top young cancer researchers seeking new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat all forms of cancer. The sale of this property will enable the Foundation to increase its funding of cutting-edge research.

While the history of the bequest to the Foundation of this famous property, with its legendary celebrity hand and foot prints, has been lost over the years, the Foundation points to Winchell's renowned radio broadcasts as the likely source of this gift. "Winchell used the radio in the 1950's and 60's to reach out to all Americans to help him defeat cancer in memory of his friend Damon Runyon, the journalist and short story writer (of Guys & Dolls fame), who died of cancer. Since then, people across the nation have continued to support our important work," say Lorraine Egan, Executive Director.

Founded in 1946, the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation is highly respected by the scientific community for the quality of the basic and clinical research it has supported and the important role it has played in identifying the most promising young scientists and encouraging them to focus their careers on cancer research. To date, the Foundation has invested over $200 million and funded more than 3,000 scientists. Eleven scientists supported by the Foundation have received the Nobel Prize Nobel Prize, award given for outstanding achievement in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, peace, or literature. The awards were established by the will of Alfred Nobel, who left a fund to provide annual prizes in the five areas listed above. . The Foundation currently is funding more than 130 scientists at leading medical centers and research institutions across the nation. This year, it will invest approximately $11 million in the most outstanding young investigators in the nation. 100% of all donations to the Foundation are used to support scientific research.
