Daly & Wolcott introduces A+ Client Server; Now Windows-based client Front End for A+ Application Plus distribution software offers users the flexibility, ease-of-use of a GUI with the power of an AS 400 Server.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--January 23, 1995--Daly & Wolcott today introduced A+ Client/Server, the first software package to enable users of its A+ Application Plus, the industry's leading software for distribution and warehouse management, to access the system entirely from a flexible, easy-to-use Microsoft Windows-based client PC. A+ Client/Server gives Daly & Wolcott customers the best of both worlds, by supporting both Windows-based PC clients and traditional text-based terminals running the same application against the same host machine.

"A+ Client/Server is our first major step toward offering our customers the benefits of client/server computing computing - computer ," said Terrance J. Daly, founder and president of the company. "Until now, many in the distribution business have shied shied 1

Daly & Wolcott's approach to client/server computing enables users running the A+ Client/Server product to take advantage of both the AS/400 server and the PC client environments. This allows distributors to minimize their equipment costs by selecting workstation types based on individual user requirements -- something that today's distributors, facing ever-increasing price margin pressures, can appreciate.

"A+ Client/Server brings users the server power, reliability and low operating cost of the AS/400, coupled with the client flexibility and productivity of a Windows-based graphical user interface running on an intelligent workstation," explained Jeff Dallas, vice president of product development at Daly & wolcott. "But this is no simple 'screen scraping' application. We've invested a great deal of time and effort to create added-value functionality on the client PC for our AS/400 community of customers."

A+ Client/Server offers AS/400 users a number of unique features. It provides graphical screens for the Windows clients that include functionality beyond that of a normal AS/400 text screen. For example, the application replaces yes/no fields with Windows check boxes, page up/page downs with scroll bars A vertical bar on the right side of a window or a horizontal bar at the bottom of a window that is used to move the window contents up and down or left and right. The bar contains a box with square or rounded corners, which together look like an elevator in a shaft. , and multiple choice fields with pull-down lists (operating system) pull-down list - (Or "drop-down list") A graphical user interface component that allows the user to choose one (or sometimes more than one) item from a list. . It also enhances A+'s native ability to allow users to design their own menu screens. No only can users configure See configuration.

their screens from the AS/400 side and have them automatically supported within Windows, but they can also take advantage of a unique roll-back feature built by Daly & Wolcott normally unavailable on an AS/400. The roll-back feature (similar to the "history" feature in the help screens of Microsoft Windows See Windows.

) allows the user to trace their steps backward in history in either of two paths: the last 10 A+ menus they have executed or the last 10 A+ menus which they've closed. This tool dynamically creates customer task lists for each user based only on the functions they use.

Another major benefit of A+ Client/Server is its ability to support multimedia data types that would be impossible using just an AS/400 text-based terminal. For example, A+ Client/Server can enable the integration of new, multimedia storage devices into the AS/400 application environment. With a Windows client workstation, A+ users desiring to add graphics or pictures to their applications can do so, despite the AS/400's inability to support images. Using A+ Client/Server, users could link their application to a CD-ROM-based electronic parts catalog Noun 1. parts catalog - a list advertising parts for machinery along with prices

, for example. Simply by creating a new button in the item inquiry window called "picture," the user could call up on-line images of the parts stored on the CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc.

while the application data remains stored on the AS/400 server.

A+ Client/Server's architectural flexibility eases the migration to client/server computing for cost-conscious distributors and warehouse operators. Text-based AS/400 terminals can be replaced by PCs on a scheduled, individual basis, when there is sufficient end-user cost justification, rather than in one wholesale upgrade. Once using a PC, users can take advantage of all that Windows has to offer, switching contexts easily from among A+ Client/Server and other GUI-based productivity tools.

The new product, which runs on Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher systems, has a suggested list price of $199 per user, and is available immediately from the company and from select Daly & Wolcott distributors, resellers and dealers within the next 30 days.
