The Dallas Cowboys did not see play time in Tampa this year at Super Bowl XLIII, but for the team?s standout tight end Jason Witten, success was still taken home from a strenuous activity in Florida. Witten was selected this week as the Home Depot NFL Neighborhood MVP, an award which he humbly accepted after spending some time hammering, nailing and mulching a new community playground in an East Tampa neighborhood. Witten spent some quality time with other Home Depot Neighborhood MVP finalists Keith Brooking (Falcons linebacker), Andre Johnson (Texans wide receiver), Mike Furrey (Lions wide receiver), Steve Smith (Panthers wide receiver), Brian Dawkins (Eagles safety) and Amani Toomer (Giants wide receiver), who all helped with the playground-building activities and were chosen by the Home Depot Neighborhood MVP Program as this year?s finalists for their charitable work off the football field.

Aside from being a five-time Pro Bowl selection and six year NFL veteran, Jason Witten has spent copious amounts of time giving back to the community. The famed Cowboy won the Home Depot Neighborhood MVP award for his presence in the community, and for this he took home a trophy and $25,000 for his charity, the Jason Witten SCORE Foundation. Witten?s SCORE Foundation was recently established to help families and individuals affected by domestic violence, and the organization (which stands for Support, Community, Overcome, Rebuild and Educate) supports several nonprofits that aid families in Texas and in his home state of Tennessee.

Witten grew up in Elizabethton, Tennessee and was an All-America selection as a linebacker in high school, also named the USA Today Player of the Year for Tennessee when he was a senior. After high school, Witten attended the University of Tennessee, and he ended his collegiate career as the school?s third best tight end on the reception list with 68 catches despite only playing three years with UT (as he left the Vols after his junior year to go pro). In 2003, Jason Witten was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round of the NFL Draft and had a phenomenal rookie year, and in his second year in the NFL the incredible tight end was selected for his first Pro Bowl, having made 87 catches in the year (the 11th most in Cowboys? history for tight ends). Witten has been selected to the prestigious Pro Bowl team every year since, and he currently holds a record for the Cowboys with 15 receptions in a game.

This season, Witten made his 400th career reception in the Cowboys? Thanksgiving Day game against the Seattle Seahawks, but football isn?t all this Tennessean has been dedicating his time to. Aside from his charity work, Witten has also appeared in public-service announcements for the NFL, most popularly alongside Antonio Gates and Reggie Bush in the NFL?s Play 60 program, which is part of a nationwide objective to get kids to be more active. Jason Witten is both a standout athlete and standup man, and you can catch him in action next season with Dallas Cowboys tickets.
