A Navy veteran, Brautigam began his foundry career in 1955 as assistant plant engineer for Westran Corp. in Muskegon, Michigan. He later worked for Sandia Corp., Campbell, Wyant & Cannon Foundry Co., Georg Fischer Foundry Systems, Inc., and Wheelabrator-Frye, Inc.
