"This is a tremendously exciting and important project," said Mr. Smith, executive in charge of production for Unapix Docere, "and one of great historic value. Mandela is one of the very few figures of our time to whom the term `legend' can be accurately applied. Everyone involved in this production feels a deep sense of responsibility in creating a thorough and accurate portrait of this incredible man."

"Mandela's singular pursuit of his life's mission, his unwavering moral certitude cer·ti·tude

, his own assured sense of his destiny make him different from ordinary men," says Frontline senior executive producer David Fanning. "Through the accounts of those close to him emerges a picture of Mandela the man and his life's method that helps explain how he could have achieved what he did."

Juergen Schremp, chairman of DaimlerChrysler commented, "DaimlerChrysler is honored to sponsor this program as it makes a powerful statement about our commitment to the principles that have inspired the life of this extraordinary man. People say that no one is irreplaceable. But there are times when history proves them wrong. Nelson Mandela is such a man. A wonderful man. A wise man. One whose life is a challenge to all of us to uphold freedom and to defend dignity and human rights wherever they are threatened."

"World affairs has long been an important part of our magazine's news coverage," adds Patrick Hagerty, publisher of U.S. News & World Report. "South Africa's political transformation is undoubtedly one of history's most intriguing stories. It is our pleasure to be part of this tribute to Nelson Mandela's extraordinary life and work."

Mr. Fanning, a South African native, and Michael Kirk, a Frontline originator, are both co-principals of Story Street Productions and executive producers of the project. The program is produced by David Fanning and Indra De Lanerolle, who provided the Johannesburg production base. Mr. Fanning's association with Frontline, America's premiere public affairs documentary series, has shepherded the series to earn 25 Emmys, six Peabody Awards, and 15 DuPont-Columbia Awards, including the prestigious Gold Baton (twice).

DaimlerChrysler will receive sponsorship credit during the broadcast, and on the home video version of the project, to be distributed by PBS Video, and in all promotional material associated with the project. U.S. News & World Report will sponsor a series of advertisements promoting the broadcast of "Nelson Mandela," and will receive on-air acknowledgement of its support. Internet promotion involving both DaimlerChrysler and U.S. News & World Report is also planned, as is a live chat session on MSNBC.com immediately following the broadcast.
