Daimler-Benz Establishes Research Center in Silicon Valley; Europe's largest industrial concern to participate in high-tech breeding ground.

Valley is the location of a new Research and Technology Center of Daimler-Benz, Europe's largest industrial group and a leading provider of products and services in all areas of mobility.

Beginning with 25 engineers and scientists, "the research center should help keep Daimler-Benz in the forefront of the accelerating revolution in transportation and related new technologies and services," said Professor Werner Pollmann, Daimler-Benz' director of advanced research, during the official opening of the facilities in Palo Alto Palo Alto, city, California

The San Francisco Bay Area, colloquially known as the Bay Area or The Bay
is one of the world's foremost breeding grounds of high technology and a center of innovative brilliance," Pollmann said. "By bringing together a broad variety of ideas and people here, we intend to inspire new areas of cooperation in our fields and also become a valuable member of the Bay Area research community."

The Daimler-Benz Research and Technology Center will focus on three major areas:

o information, micro-technology and intelligent systems o transportation and mobility o society and technology

Daimler-Benz has specific interests that involve multimedia, the information superhighway and the Automated Highway System An automated highway system (AHS) or Smart Road is an advanced intelligent transportation system technology designed to provide for driverless cars on specific rights-of-way.  (AHS AHS Assistant House Surgeon. ), a U.S. government-sponsored research project that aims at the fully automated traffic flow on interstates. In addition, Daimler-Benz, in its pursuit of advancing mobility, is constantly exploring the interrelationship in·ter·re·late

About 10 percent of revenues is spent annually on research and development within the Group. The advanced research division of Daimler-Benz consists of 1,500 scientists and engineers, 14 percent of whom are non-German or work outside Germany. Daimler-Benz intends to increase this to 20 percent over the next three years.

North America is the most important Daimler-Benz export market. About 20,000 people in 40 subsidiaries create more than $10 billion in revenues through manufacturing, marketing and joint ventures.
