"This trend vindicates our course of focusing on high-growth, high-earnings fields of activity," commented Daimler-Benz Chairman Juergen E. Schrempp. Summing up the first nine months of 1996, the Daimler-Benz letter to shareholders published today also states that Mercedes-Benz revenues increased by eight percent to just under DM 57 billion during this period. Comparably calculated revenues of Daimler-Benz Aerospace (Dasa) increased by 18 percent to just under DM 8.3 billion. Daimler-Benz InterServices (debis) maintained its dynamic growth, with a 14 percent rise in revenues to DM 9.8 billion. Revenues also increased during this period in the businesses which report directly to Daimler-Benz AG (Rail Systems/Adtranz, Microelectronics/Temic, Diesel Engines/MTU Friedrichshafen, Recognition and Sorting Systems/Electrocom). These businesses posted total revenues of DM 5.5 billion. This positive trend in business is projected to continue in the fourth quarter of the year, so that Daimler-Benz expects full-year revenues of over DM 105 billion. It is particularly encouraging to note that the sharp increases mentioned above were achieved despite relatively modest trends in numerous product markets and regions. The Daimler-Benz group realized increased business in virtually all parts of the world. On Sept. 30, 1996, the Daimler-Benz group had 290,031 employees worldwide (comparable figure for 1995: 291,226), of whom 223,106 (Sept. 30, 1995: 226,701) worked in Germany and 66,925 (Sept. 30, 1995: 64,525) elsewhere. The positive trend in performance at Mercedes-Benz is due above all to new, successful products and significant productivity advances. Revenues increased during the period to DM 56.9 billion. An above-average increase of 11 percent to DM 22.6 billion was recorded in Germany, and strong growth also was recorded in Western Europe Western Europe The countries of western Europe, especially those that are allied with the United States and Canada in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (established 1949 and usually known as NATO). outside Germany (+18 percent), the USA (+11 percent) and Japan (+21 percent). Car sales revenues increased by 16 percent, while sales of commercial vehicles showed a slight decline. This is attributable to the unfavorable conditions for trucks in Germany and important overseas markets and the model change in the heavy-duty segment. The company's world sales of commercial vehicles increased in unit terms, however, by five percent to 248,600 vehicles, largely spurred by van business. The Mercedes-Benz dealer network sold 491,000 cars to customers during the period under review. Consolidated unit sales unit sales Sales measured in terms of physical units rather than dollars. Orders received in the first nine months of 1996 were up 89 percent on the first nine months of 1995, at DM 13.6 billion. 269 aircraft were ordered from Airbus in the first three quarters of the year, as many as in the previous three years together. Dasa continued to move forward with its competitiveness-improvement measures, thus further reducing the dependence of its results on the value of the dollar. In Rail Systems, the Daimler-Benz share in the revenues of the joint venture Adtranz was DM 1.9 billion. Orders worth DM 2.1 billion were received for the period from January to September. In October, further large orders were received from China, Singapore, Turkey and Thailand. Sales of Microelectronics microelectronics, branch of electronic technology devoted to the design and development of extremely small electronic devices that consume very little electric power. from January to September totalled DM 1.8 billion (+11 percent). Orders received fell by four percent to DM 1.7 billion, primarily due to the weakness of the semiconductor market. The Diesel Engines business unit increased its revenues by 13 percent to DM 1.1 billion. Orders received rose by 14 percent to DM 1.2 billion, above all in the high-growth segments Distributed Power Supply Systems and Commercial Ships.
