The Week is an initiative led by S4C,designed to encourage more adults to take up Welsh language learning. Nia Parry, who presents S4C's learners programmes Welsh in a Week and cariad@iaith, will visit 15 companies across Wales Wales, Welsh Cymru, western peninsula and political division (principality) of Great Britain (1991 pop. 2,798,200), 8,016 sq mi (20,761 sq km), west of England; politically united with England since 1536. The capital is Cardiff. during the next five days, giving short Welsh lessons which will hopefully encourage the employees to carry on learning Welsh after her departure. Nia will also teach employees some vocabulary relevant to their work. To mark this year's initiative, the Welsh Language and Heritage Centre at Nant Gwrtheyrnthe opportunity to enjoy a taste of the Welsh language and culture,local history and nature. Nant Gwrthyern also now has an Education Officer who can arrange various tailor- made one --day and residential courses for schools and youth groups. In 2004,new courses for experienced learners and fluent Welsh speakers will look at aspects of Welsh culture such as literature,history,art and music. Throughout this week, free Welsh Learning Week information packs are also being made available. Each pack contains an audiotape au·di·o·tape n. 1. A relatively narrow magnetic tape used to record sound for subsequent playback. 2. A tape recording of sound. tr.v. featuring basic Welsh phrases and vocabulary, an accompanying booklet, a diary, and information on where and how to learn Welsh. The packs can be ordered free from Learn Direct on 0800 100 900 or on line at S4C's dedicated Welsh learning website, www.s4c.co.uk/cymraeg. This is the third year that the initiative has been held and in that time 9,000 information packs have been distributed. In 2000/2001 a record number of 24,000 adults enrolled for Welsh lessons. S4C Chairwoman,Elan Closs Stephens, said: ``The Welsh language is a vibrant, living language that can be used in any environment and as the Welsh language tour shows, there's interest in learning Welsh from all quarters. Welsh is also fun and that's an important part of what we'll be doing during the Week, and also in our Welsh learners' series, Welsh in a Week (startingon S4C on Tuesday,9 September,9.00pm) and cariad@iaith (starting on S4C on Tuesday, 16 September, 9.00pm).
