The two sides have made progress on many benefit and arbitration issues, but still disagree on wages at the 202,384-circulation San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

The Daily News has offered a $650-per-week salary for reporters who have worked at the paper six years, far short of the union's $800-per-week request.

The $650 minimum offer is less than the minimum scale for experienced reporters at Los Angeles papers with smaller circulations. For example, reporters earn $756 at the Long Beach Press-Telegram The Long Beach Press-Telegram is a major daily newspaper published in Long Beach, California. The difference between the two sides, said attorney Thomas Burke who represents management, is that the union wants "high minimum wage irrespective of performance," while management wants a lower minimum, but will bring up the pay with performance.

Both sides said there is no target date for concluding the negotiations. Burke emphasized that great progress has been made on many issues and he does not believe that "there is anything to be gained by setting a deadline for the first contract."
